A SMALL THING

What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage that I may gain Christ. (Phil. 3:8)

I think we would all agree that good things are better than small things, even though at times there are little things that are dear to us. So I am not discounting little things but I am going to discuss some small things that get in the way of the good things.

Why is it that we let small things spin us around and keep us awake? Why is it that sometimes we allow small things to dominate our thoughts until we cannot think straight?

Someone says or does a certain thing that is really no big deal, but we find ourselves thinking about it. I put a lot of miles on for different things this week and even though there was not a great deal of construction I was often amazed at the other drivers. People would pass me and then when we got into construction it was like they no longer knew how to drive with traffic coming in the lane next to them! I would speak to myself about good things and praise God, but then I would be back to trying to figure out what was wrong with them. I would set my mind to find out who was driving that vehicle or imagine that they would on their phone. Then I would remind myself to stay on good things!

Of course there are always small things that try to get in the way of the good things and even though we do not want to dwell on them, we sometimes do. Paul speaks of a solution to this problem. As Christians, we know this is the perfect solution. We often consider the solution and we often are frustrated when we fail to press in on the good things. Still, knowing the solution gives a head start on the victory.

Paul points out that he lost all things for the sake of knowing Christ. We all have lost things in order to follow Jesus. We all can agree that most of the things that we gave up were things we were glad to have gone. In fact we really did not give them up, we got rid of them.

Paul said he considered those things garbage. We all have filled a few garbage bags as well and we will continue to find things here and there that we can drop in the can. Oftentimes the things we find are small things and unfortunately, we do not always see those as a problem until they make problems for us. It is kind of like finding a dirty tissue after it goes through the wash. It would have been beneficial if it went in the trash! It is just a small thing, but what a mess. In fact, when one ends up the wash it can cause a stir just figuring out who did it! There are a lot of small things in life that are tissues in the wash. If only we would just dump those thoughts and let them go when they first pass through rather than dwelling on them until they cause a problem! Keep an eye out for small things. Let them go!
