A TRUE SAYING

This is a true saying, and everyone should believe it: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--and I was the worst of them all. (1 Timothy 1:13 NLT)

It is sad but true that we often loose sight of what is most important to God. I am not talking about the world when I say this, but rather about Christians. This scripture just confirms the fact that this is not a new thing. It was going on back in the early church and will be going on right up to the moment Christ returns so that we can dwell in His presence forever. Therefore, it is a good thing for us to remember today.

First of all, it is a true saying. It really makes no difference what we think, prefer, like or dislike; it is the truth. Jesus came into the world for one purpose and that was to save sinners. He did not come looking down on them or showing disgust for them. He came to save them. He came to save us. If you are save, give Him thanks right now.

Now a Christian is no longer a sinner. I did not say we do not sin, I simply said that we should no longer be sinners. We are no longer controlled by sin and we should be choosing not to sin. Still, Jesus continues to save us from the sins we do commit. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. Since we are far from perfect, we certainly should not expect those who are still bound by sin to be perfect. Nor should we expect our brothers and sisters in Christ to be perfect. We should however encourage one another to strive for the perfection that is ours in Christ.

So, Jesus came to save sinners and He left us with the assignment to spread the word. He told us to continue to give out what we have been given. We received salvation, so we should be focused on passing that around. This is the most important thing. All of the other things Jesus promised go along with it. But the reason He came was to save sinners. I know I am repeating myself, but we need to remember this.

Second, Paul said that he was the worst of them all. Do you think that he was really the greatest sinner? Surely there must have been someone worse. After all, Paul did it in ignorance. Still, in Paul’s mind he was the worst of them all. How do you feel about your life before Christ? Do feel like you were the worst of them all, or do you feel like you were just a little bad? Personally, I think I was the worst of them all, and you should too. If we don’t think we were so bad, then we won’t be so grateful. If we don’t think we were so bad, then we won’t have nearly so much compassion for those who are still trapped in sin. If we don’t think we were so bad, we will tend to be disgusted with those who we think are bad and we will just write them off as being made for destruction.

It is a true saying the Christ came to save sinners. It is also true that we are called to go and do likewise. If you know Christ, you are so fortunate. Thank Him again for saving you, and pray that many others will come to know Him today.
