ADJUST TO LIGHT NOT DARK
But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness. (Matthew 6:23 NLT)
I think everyone agrees that bright lights in the middle of the night are not very comfortable for the eyes. Often times this is about how it feels when the light of the gospel shines on our lives. After all, the Word of God is sharp. It pierces our hearts. It reveals the darkness in and around us. It also creates a hunger in our lives for more light.
This is of course the ideal response to the gospel. Unfortunately it is not always the response that takes place. Much like the person who is awakened from sleep with a quick “wake up” and then the light comes on, we often would prefer that the light be blocked out so we can go back to sleep. Then again, if there is something going on that we have been looking forward to, we will bounce up, adjust to the light, and get going.
In order to continue to walk with the Lord, we must take His advice. He encouraged us to walk in the light just like He walks in the light. We know that scripture tells us that there was no darkness in Him at all. Personally, I know I have a ways to go to get it all out. It seems that the light just keeps revealing things that need work. When the light shines on these spots in our lives, we have a choice. We can either adjust to the light and enjoy walking in the truth, or we can choose to adjust to living in the dark.
In our own homes, we know where everything is well enough that we can walk around in the dark. In the same way, we can get comfortable with the dark rooms in our lives and just pass quickly through them. Fortunately, God loves us so much that from time to time He will just turn a flood light on that area and give us an opportunity to fix things. Sometimes, if we don’t take care of it one on one with Him, it ends up being exposed in ways that are much more uncomfortable. Some with public ministries have had very public exposure. I am certain they never intended for it to get that far. It is a reminder to all of us not to adjust to any darkness at all.
Think about this. Are there things that you are comfortable with now that you were not when you first fell in love with Jesus. Look at how our society is getting comfortable with sins that used to be only whispered behind closed doors. Isn’t it interesting that people are up in arms about the fact that many of our people in leadership roles in government are actually standing up and promoting good morals? This is because they have adjusted so much to darkness that they cannot stand the light.
There are actually people who live in tunnels in our large cities who have adapted so much to the dark that they don’t even like the light. As Christians, we must ask God to shine the light brightly in every area of our lives. We cannot let the darkness overtake us. There are too many people who are looking for light and we must shine for Jesus.
May God help us all to determine that we will not adjust to the darkness; we will only adjust to His light. It won’t always be comfortable but it will keep us free.
