ALIENATED

...being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them...(Ephesians 4:18)

It does not bother me to discover that I do not know something. In fact, I am very aware that there is a great deal I do not know. It does bother me however, when not knowing something keeps me from something that I desire. Some things I will remain ignorant of, such as brain surgery, but even then, if I or someone I knew were going to have brain surgery I would want to know all I could about it. No matter what, I recognize that when it comes to certain things I will most likely never rise above the ignorant level, but that is okay with me.

However, it is not fine with me to be alienated from the life of God. I refuse to stand in ignorance concerning anything that has to do with that. I am not saying there is nothing that I am ignorant of but I am saying that I refuse to stay there without seeking and searching for the life of God. He has promised it is there me to find.

I hope we all realize that we can experience attacks of ignorance at any point in our lives. It was ignorance that kept us outside of the Kingdom of God in the first place. Only Jesus was born in the kingdom, the rest of us needed to be born into the Kingdom by faith in Him. Once we overcame that ignorance, we were on our way.

In case you have not yet discovered it, there are many ignorance booths along the way where we can take up residence. These bouts with ignorance keep us from the life of God. As this scripture says, we become alienated from the life of God or the life that God intended for us because of the ignorance that is in us that only we can overcome.

Paul wrote as a prisoner of the Lord telling them to walk worthy of the calling of God. He did not want them to allow his circumstances to keep them from marching on. He certainly never intended that we adopt the idea that the only way to be a real Christian would be to end up in jail. If on the other hand we end up there, then we should walk in the life of God while there, but don’t go looking for it. That would be ignorant.

We need to recognize whether or not we are experiencing the life of God. No matter what the experience, if we do not realize righteousness, joy, and peace, in the Holy Spirit, then we need to get with it and find out why. The life of God is always accessible by the child of God. It would be ignorant to doubt this. How else could Paul say that he had learned to be content in all circumstances? It was because he refused to be alienated from the life of God. We can look at the list of things Paul mentions and they all amount to sin, but don’t forget what the greatest sin is. The one sin that can keep us out of the kingdom of God is unbelief. Unbelief is ignorance to the extreme and it is sad to say that believers have just as much opportunity not to believe as anyone. This will most certainly alienate us from the life that God intends for us. I don’t want my own ignorance to keep me out of the good plans that God has for me. If I am going be alienated, it will be from the world and not the life of God.
