ALL STIRRED UP

For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water (John 5:4a)

What do you do when you are stirred up? The Bible tells us that the people waited around the pool because when the angel came and stirred, troubled, or agitated the water the first one in got healed. Now, here comes Jesus and simply asks a man if he wants to be made whole. The man contends that he can’t because no one will put him in the water. However, when Jesus commanded him to get up he responded and the rest is history.

As I read this I wondered why he ever bothered to sit there if he had no hope of ever getting into the water. It was just another day at the pool with business as usual. How many times had he watched the water stir and seen someone else get in and have their needs met? Now on this day Jesus came and stirred his soul rather than the water. Jesus suggested that he could be made whole. It took him a bit to get over his traditional thinking, but when Jesus commanded him to get up, he responded and he received.

So, what do you do when the Lord stirs your spirit? Do you know that since Jesus came, the water has been flowing and in a constant state of stir? Even when it looks serene on the top, the water is stirring underneath ready to reveal the kingdom of God. Remember, it was an ordinary day at the pool until Jesus showed up. Now, Jesus is always present.

Jesus is present when other things stir and agitate us as well. The Holy Spirit is just as present to perform miracles in the way we respond to troubles, as He is to perform miracles of healing, deliverance, protection, or provision. So what is our response when the Spirit says, “do you want to be made whole in this particular matter?” Jesus did not just offer this man healing; He offered to make him whole!

It seems to me that we may be all be guilty at times of not expecting anything to happen in our lives. Many have seen the water stirred and witnessed others receiving things but have not been interested enough to respond themselves. Many have been touched on numerous occasions but shrugged it off so often that they are immune to it. It is a sad thing when people develop a high tolerance to the Word of God, instead of a big appetite for it. Some people are so strong in resisting that it looks like nothing will reach them.

If you have been blessed to respond to the stirring, never stop. Get in the water at every opportunity. When things are great, get in the water. When there are troubles, get in the water. When you are agitated, get in the water. In everything, get in the water. Don’t stand watching. Don’t resist the stirring of the Holy Spirit. Don’t ignore the voice of the Lord. Stay stirred up for the things of God.
