ALWAYS NEAR

They were now on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead them. The disciples were filled with awe, and the people following behind were overwhelmed with fear. Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus once more began to describe everything that was about to happen to him. (Mark 10:32)

What happened to Jesus? Everything He said would happen happened because everything God has spoken is true and powerful and good. Everything that happened had to happen. Everything that was about to happen was predicted long before Jesus started telling them about it. It was spoken before He was born. They had been exposed to these truths but like the rest of us, they were selective of what they believed and how they believed it. Jesus promised that if they would abide in Him they would know the truth and the truth would make them free. They are we!
One thing they had going for them was that they were in awe of Him. It is good to be wowed by God. It is good to participate in the story. I recently took some training for prison ministry and we often were required to participate and take an active role. We were required to demonstrate some of the things we learned. Of course we were allowed the option of not being a part of anything we were uncomfortable with, but it was best to participate. The same is true in our relationship with God. We need to participate. Everything with God is not always comfortable to start with.
Our first participation is easy; we must believe. We must believe that Jesus is the same yesterday today and forever. In other words, what happened to Him, did not change Him, rather it transformed all who would believe all that He said. Each thing we believe transforms us. When we believe He died for the forgiveness of our sins we are freed from the power sin had over us. We no longer have to sin. We can change because He said so.
Part of the fear that the disciples had was that they liked being near Him and he was telling them that He was going away. He also told them that He was and would be with them always. He told them that He would ask and that the Father would send another comforter and that they would receive power when He came. He told them He would never leave or forsake them. This was a lot to take in, and it is a lot for us to take in as well. Since it is the truth we ought to believe it. Faith allows us to believe things long before we understand them and yet people often stand away from Jesus because they just don’t quite understand. I say, believe it and the understanding will come. There are a lot of things in our normal lives that we make use of without much understanding of how they work.
Scripture says that Abraham was looking for a home built by God. Jesus became our home. We get to see what everyone before us was looking for. Jesus made the way. Jesus is always near.
