AN IMPORTAN EVENT

He told them, "Get ready for an important event, two days from now." (Exodus 19:15 NLT)

It seems only fitting to talk about important events today. After all, the whole world is preparing for the biggest football game of the year. Well maybe not the whole world, but a good portion of it any way. Once again I think much of the church could learn a lesson from how the world does things. Please don’t misunderstand me. I like football. I lived for it for many years of my life. So I am not saying anything against the game or the celebration. I just want to take a look at what we as Christians can learn from the things that are around us.

For one thing there is a lot of anticipation of the big day. For two weeks they have been analyzing statistics and checking on each players health. Odds makers are busy setting up the betting on the game. People are flying from around the world to attend the game. Those who did not get tickets early are paying a premium for chance to watch the game. There have been parties going on all week. They do this because something important is going to happen. Of course smaller versions of this celebration go on in cities around the country every week on game day. In fact, I believe there are many folks who join in the preparation that never get into the actual game.

Oh, and let’s not forget that the folks who have analyzed all of this are making predictions as to the outcome of the game. Everyone expects each player to play at their maximum potential, and if they do, then things will go as planned. The only problem is that we are dealing with mortals here. Occasionally, someone who was not expected to be a big factor turns in a great performance and someone who is expected to do great things has a bad day. Even the realization that these things could happen does not change the preparation and the anticipation of something important happening.

I remember the first time that our family drove “all the way to Minneapolis” for some special revival meetings. There were people who wondered why in the world we needed to go that far just for some church meeting. Well, God led us to go there so we expected something important to happen. I tell you the truth; I felt His presence in the parking lot long before we entered the building. There were no grills cooking or people celebrating but there sure should have been. It was great! We did not have to worry about getting good seats, because the star of the show was dwelling inside us. He was pointing out the best plays and I was guaranteed success. God always performs at His maximum potential. He never has a bad day. Oh, and the tickets were free so that was a plus. There were no fights in the stands either. Everyone was on the same side. Well there may have been a few resisting what God wanted to do, but that was okay.

The truth is that something important is happening everyday. We all have the opportunity to come into the presence of God as often and for as long as we want. Even when we are doing other things, He never leaves nor forsakes us. He abides with us and we can abide in Him.

As we gather together at appointed times, it would be wise for us to anticipate something wonderful happening. We need to remember that it is an important event. How wonderful would it be if all Christians everywhere celebrated with cheering and feasting in preparation for the very most important event? Yes, one day the Lord will return with a shout that will shake the earth. Until then, let’s celebrate His presence together with great joy. Something important will happen for you today and everyday. You will dwell in the presence of the Lord. Is that cheering and shouting I hear. Praise the Lord!
