ASK HIM

If you need wisdom--if you want to know what God wants you to do--ask Him, and He will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. (James 1:5 NLT)

Deep in our hearts we all want to do what God wants us to do. We want to know for sure what will please Him. So why don’t we just ask Him? Why don’t we ask Him about every single decision we make and check in with Him before we say anything? Does that sound like it is bit overboard on the God stuff? Well, if we really want to know what He wants, He says to ask.

We do this in the other parts of our daily life. Think about it. If someone calls and asks me something that is going to affect my wife, I will more than likely say that I better check with her before I say for sure. If my children have a question that is best answered by their mother I will say, “you better ask your mom.” The same is true if they ask her something that she feels is best for me to answer. If you think about it, you can come up with many scenarios in life where it is necessary to ask someone else because they are the best one to answer.

Often times when my children have wanted something, I have told them to pray and ask God about it. If they came and told me they felt God told them one thing or another, that was the decision we went with. Of course in all of our lives we have found that what we felt God said did not turn out just the way that we wanted, but still asking God is the best thing to do. Asking God and hearing God takes practice. Testing the spirit after we hear takes practice as well. The key is to practice.

Now when it comes to our daily life there is no doubt that we defer the question to someone else as a way to get out of making the decision, but asking God is always the best way to go. I mean, if we really want to know what God wants, we should always be more than happy to ask Him.

Have you ever had someone suggest that you ask God about something when He was the last one you wanted to ask? For instance, let’s say I am not walking in all the grace I should be, and someone says, “I think you should ask God about your attitude.” If I am wise, I will melt and go right away and speak to God about it. If I am foolish, I will respond less appropriately. There is always the possibility that I am justified in my whip of cords moment, but just in case I should be sensitive to the Spirit of God.

Have you ever been in a quandary over something and finally when you talked to someone about it, they ask you, “Have you prayed about it?” At that moment you feel like it is a silly question. Of course you pray about everything, but then again maybe you just agonized over it and never really asked God about it. If you really want to know ask Him and expect Him to answer.
