AWARE OF PRAYER
And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God with boldness.(Acts 4:31)
“Well, we could pray,” or “We prayed, but.” Have you ever heard these statements? They come as a last resort, or doubtful report! We say things like this because we are not really aware of prayer. We have not grasped the power or importance of it. We are not really sure that it will help, but we do believe that it could not hurt!
Most of us know in theory that prayer should be the first thing we do, and we may even throw a prayer up as we go with what we have planned. However, we often lack any sort of certainty that it has really accomplished anything.
Let’s face it; it does seem like a small thing in the great scope of things. Imagine the disciples in the beginning. They had watched or heard about all the action that took place in and around the temple for years, but never really saw any results for themselves. It was the same old thing all the time. Of course they were not really considered to be the elite of the religious world. However, as they traveled with Jesus they saw some things happening as a result of prayer. They saw enough to ask Him to teach them how to pray. They became aware of prayer.
Because they became aware of prayer, they began to see results for themselves. In fact, the major legacy that Jesus left them was prayer. They learned to wait on the Lord. There is great comfort to be found in waiting confidently upon the Lord.
When we wait on the Lord, we can hear Him telling us not to fear. He will remind us that He is a shield about us. He will help us to be aware that His economy is different from the world’s economy and that this earthly economy is only a tool that is useful for advancing the Kingdom of God. He is after all God, who made heaven and earth and the seas and all that is in them.
Imagine having the confidence that Jesus had in communion with His Father. He could say that a man who had been dead for four days was only sleeping. He could say to a man whose child had died, “Fear not!”
We do not need to know everything about how prayer works or how God works things out; we simply need to be aware that prayer works. The more certain we are that it works the more certain we will be to put prayer in its proper place. The more we do that, the more we will see the results of praying in faith. The plan is to become so certain that God cannot fail that we cannot think of anything else until we have prayed.
Pray without out ceasing. This is the will of God. Rejoice forever more; confident that God hears your prayers. Become more aware of prayer than ever before in your life!
