BEING AND LEARNING
If any man be in Christ, He is a new creature. The old life is gone; a new life has begun. (2 Cor. 5:17)
I would prefer to be what God has called me to be rather than always learning and never letting what I learn take hold. So many things have run through my mind concerning what should concern me. Do you ever find yourself asking yourself why something is bothering you? Do you ever notice that you spend a lot of time being bothered by what is not really your business?
Let’s face it, sometimes we learn so much that we wonder if we know anything. What I used to be so sure I knew I now find that I have some things to learn. Like I have more to learn now than when I really did not know anything.
This causes me to consider just how much more important it is to be about our father’s business. Paul told Timothy to be cautious of becoming someone who was so busy learning things that they never had time to understand. If we do not understand what God has in mind, we will never have the joy of what it is to be in Christ and walk in the newness of life.
We absolutely are called to get understanding. We just are not supposed to let our understanding elevate us to a point of pride and all knowing. When a person thinks they know too much it is difficult to follow God’s call to humble ourselves in the sight of God so that we can resist the devil and have him flee. Seriously, how could we think that the devil could have any sway in our lives. Think about that. Can the devil have any influence in your life?
Ok, I am going to leave that to another day. Let’s move on with being what God has called us to be. The word fervent flowed into my mind in the night recently. We are called to be fervent in love! I think I am reasonably fervent in my love for God. Then I suppose I should add most of the time! I say this because I fully realize that part two of the greatest commandment is loving others. So, if I fail to love others fervently, I am sort of loving God along those same lines. Oh, how I hate it when it is complicated. When I fail to do the whole thing, I show just how much all my learning is processing into being.
So, I see that I should not neglect learning, but I must continue to be more like Jesus who lives in me. Otherwise, it is quite possible that as I get smarter, I also show more clearly just how ignorant I have become.
We have a goal, and that goal is receiving the prize of the high calling of God that is in Christ Jesus. Thousands of people die without ever knowing all that we have the opportunity to learn. Scripture tells us that we are not even worthy to compare ourselves with them. They died being what they loved. They loved being Christians.
What a privilege we have that we should be called children of God. In all of our learning let’s also be being transformed. Then our transformation will be an influence on the world around us. The early disciples changed the world. Let’s make that our focus as well.
