BETTER THINGS

...We really don't believe that it applies to you. We are confident that you are meant for better things, things that come with salvation. (Hebrews 6:9 NLT)

I think it would be pretty safe to say that we live in a world that understands the idea of “better things.” We want things bigger and better, newer and nicer, and we want them now. I know that not everyone may be this way, but for the most part we at least long for better. No mater whether a person is rich or poor, there is that desire for better.

Some folks become a little indignant when Christians dare to desire better, after all we should just be satisfied with what we have. Of course you know, that it is usually other Christians who get the most indignant! Perhaps if we just had a little more understanding of what God intended for us we would realize that we can be very content and full of desire at the same time.

For instance I am very content with how good God is, but I still desire to know Him better and experience more of His goodness. But then I am not the perfect example, not by a long shot. Jesus is the perfect example. I believe he continually desired the good things from God. As a result, He saw the lame walk and the dumb talk. He saw the blind receive their sight and every disease healed. He was willing to do whatever His Father desired of Him and yet we know He asked for the cup to pass from Him. Even in that, we know from scripture that He endured the cross as He looked at the joy and the glory that was coming after. To me it is like saying, he put up with it but still He desired the better things that were coming. So isn’t it okay for us to desire better things as we endure not so good things? In fact, this scripture says that we are meant for better things that come with salvation. Since God’s word says there are better things, then there must be better things.

Believe me, when I was first saved it was my declaration that God did not have to do one more thing for me. I felt like I already had way more than I deserved, and I did. The only problem with that was if there was nothing more, then why keep seeking. It was God who challenged me to seek for more. There is more love and more power and more God in my life. The are a multitude of spiritual benefits and I want them all. At the same time, I do not want to miss out on the life benefits God has promised. If we neglect them, we can’t expect them.

It was Jesus that said that all the things we needed for life would be added to us if we sought the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. The only true better things are the ones that come from God and remember God owns everything. It is God who makes all things better. “Things,” without God, can never satisfy us. But we should not neglect the things that God has for us when we are with Him. We are in the season where a lot of “things” that can become our focus. If we will just make sure we keep our eyes on Him, then we can enjoy all the “things” that go with the celebration of Jesus birth.
