BIAS

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)

We all are biased in our own way. Webster defines bias as “an inclination of temperament of outlook.” This can apply to all sorts of things and affects most everything in our lives. Bias can sneak in when we do not see it, but others do! It is important to understand our own bias because it is how we judge or make decisions in our lives.

A simple example would be concerning what the Bible says about the stripes of Jesus. “By His stripes we are healed.” However, if our bias is not to believe that God heals anymore or that healing is a hit a miss thing and not to be depended upon; what will win? The same could be said about the biblical reference that we all must be born again. If we have not learned that and in fact have been conditioned to depending on church attendance or another doctrine, our bias will resist and even cancel that truth.

Bias is everywhere. Some people will only drive Fords and others Chevys. People have a bias for or against global warming and the list goes on.

Here is the thing; bias can be good or bad. It can protect us, and it can get us in trouble. It can cause us to be blessed, and it can rob us. So, it is important to consider what our bias is based on! Why do we believe and act as we do?

The scripture above tells us to trust the Lord and not to depend on our own understanding. We need to be willing to sacrifice our bias to the wisdom of God. If we will, He will show us that we have been wrong and that it is ok to have been wrong as long as we are willing to change.

We not only need to be willing to change; we must have a desire to change! When we see the light on a subject, we should walk in it. The battle with bias applies to everything. If we get our bias in line with the one thing, then all things will move in the best direction.

Our kids introduced us to a word game, and now every day the results are being shared amongst us. My bias is that I have little need nor time for such things, but some things just happen. Well, I am not about to tell everyone that they should do it, but I am involved now. One thing that I have learned in doing it is to watch how the words begin to fall into place if we get on the right line. One letter can make all the difference. The same is true in our lives. The adjustment of one little bias can transform an entire life.

Proverbs 10:30 tells us that the godly will never be disturbed. The wicked on the other hand, will be removed from the land. Let’s face it, there are a lot of disturbing things that go on in and around our lives! The Lord pointed out to me that I don’t have to be disturbed just because something disturbing comes up! In other words, we are most certainly going to be disturbed by some things and in fact some things should disturb us right into action! Still, we do not have to live disturbed over it. Look at it this way, just because something bugs us, we do not have to let it rule us. With our bias based on the ways of the Lord, every letter can fall into place and result in life!
