BUILD A BOAT
So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him. (Genesis 6:22 NLT)
God gave Noah specific instructions on how to build the boat so that it would float. No doubt He watched closely as it was under construction. Scripture says that he was in close fellowship with God, so it would stand to reason that having given Noah the instructions, God also watched the process and offered guidance. So if God said, you need more tar here, or that piece of wood is not going work there, Noah simply said thank you Lord and followed instructions. After all, Noah was not a ship builder. He really had very little idea what he was doing. He had to trust God.
When I was in college they were looking for people to work cribbing an elevator. I had no idea what that was. The money was going to be good, so it was a perfect way to spend the summer. When we arrived we discovered that it was building a wooden grain storage facility by stacking layer after layer up, up, up. The higher it went, the closer you listened to instructions and the more careful you were.
Noah really did not know for sure what was coming, but He trusted God. In the same way, we are not always sure what is coming, but we must trust God. We also must follow His instructions. We are saved by grace but it is foolish to think that we can just ignore the instructions and the guidance of the Lord.
Jesus said that there were floods (tribulation) in this world, but through Him we can overcome them. We have continual exposure to life and death options. I am not talking about instantaneous physical life and death, though there are those too, but spiritual choices. Will we follow Gods instructions for life or choose our own way.
There was a reason God told Noah to use a certain wood and to cover it in pitch inside and out. Noah could not just shrug that off because God told him He was going to save him.
I don’t want to just hope my boat floats. I want to be sure that it will not only float, but that it will be capable of taking on passengers along the way. If we follow instructions, believe, seek, and worship the Lord, we can be sure. If we ignore God and fail to coat the boat inside and out with more of Him, will our boat float in the storms of life?
There is a reason that we are warned not to neglect this great salvation. We told to build our faith on the solid foundation of Christ. We are warned of the dangers of unbelief. Even though Noah did not know for sure what was really about to happen, he knew God well enough to trust Him and do exactly as he was commanded. I don’t know about you, but I do not want to float in a leaky boat. Our lives and the lives of others depend on it.
