BUT NOW

Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people. (Jude 1:3 NLT)

There is so much that God does for us on a daily basis, so many things to rejoice in and these are the things that we should talk of all of the time! The Lord is good. He always does good and we should never cease to praise Him.
These are the things that Jude wanted to write about, but before he could get going, the Holy Spirit reminded him that there were other things that needed to be addressed and so he got right to the point.
Getting to the point is something that we often find uncomfortable. Many things come up and we would like to just let them go and hope they go away, but do they really go away that way? No they just gather territory and make things worse when it finally does resurface.
Right now, my bride is off for a few days burdened with the task of enjoying our new granddaughter. I am sure she will be able to handle it! In the mean time, I pick up some new things like keeping the counters clean, sweeping up the animal hair and etc. It is best if I just do it. Oh, I could wait ten days and have a whirlwind cleaning day while she is flying home, but what if I don’t and she shows up and it is a mess? Well I am going to do my best to not let that happen.
In the same way, we really must not put off keeping our walk with God in order. No doubt, to some of the people it sounded good that they could just live anyway they wanted because of God’s great grace, but inside I am certain it was not comfortable. That sort of think just promotes rationalizing and excusing and judging and well it ends up not fun at all.
Jude points out that the condemnation of such people was recorded long ago! Wow, that is kind of harsh! You would think that he could have worked his way up to such a statement in a more gentle way; right? If a car is coming at someone and you are near, do you ease into getting them out of way or warning them to get out of the way? Do you say excuse me? Excuse me; I don’t want to upset or offend you but there is a car coming. If it hit them and they survived, what do you think they might say? They might ask why you did not just grab them or yell louder.
Jude was grabbing and yelling and reminding in as strong of way as he could. He appealed to what they once new. In other words, he gave them an opportunity to straighten up and remember what they knew. For those who had bought into this idea it was a wake-up call. For those who had not yet acted but also had not corrected others it was a reminder to do what is right. We are in a time when things are creeping in again. Let’s all take a lesson from Jude. Defend the faith!
