CALM AND QUIET
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me. Oh, put your hope in the Lord. (Ps. 131:1-3)
Does your hope ever wander? Does it sometimes disappear? Does it seem like there is no calm or quiet as your mind races?
I woke up early this morning but then attempted to rest and sleep a bit more. I prayed. My mind wandered. I returned to prayer. My mind wandered. I told the Lord I was sorry. Seriously, there I was in the presence of God thinking about everything else but God and having to force myself to get back to God.
Of course, this was not really a new thing. Still, it is always a battle worth fighting. It is always fruitful. There is such joy in the victory. There is joy in knowing that no matter how many blows of distraction may land, I am determined to get back to the Lord. He is always present. He does not walk away when I drift. He stays close like a parent who follows a child that wanders off exploring new frontiers.
As you follow, it is fun to see them turn around to make sure you are following and keeping them safe. We can be sure that God is always nearby. He never loses track of us. It is scary when we lose track of a child and worse when we fail to check and keep God in sight.
When our son Michael was young, we had to keep a close watch on Him. Once he was standing in the road with semi-trucks lined up. Other times we found him hiding on shelves in stores. A really scary time was when he disappeared at a busy truck stop. In desperation, I cried out to the Lord to show me where he was. Of course, God knew and led me on what I thought must just be me going on a wild goose chase! I found Michael down in a ravine playing in a stream of water. We believe an angel rescued him and placed him there. It was a moment of calm and peace after a great deal of anxious prayer. God is faithful.
Never forget the faithfulness of God. No matter how disrupting or disturbing a situation is, calm and quiet yourself. Draw near to God.
Our daughters have blessed us with two new granddaughters. They are both tiny and far from being weaned. There is only one person who can really calm them; that is momma. We can pat them and tell them it will be alright as much as we want but they are only calmed by one very special person.
One day they will be calm and able to wander off. Then comes the opportunity for mischief. The same is true for us. When everything is good and we are not fearful, we need to be careful to watch out for mischief in our lives. We need to guard against the attitude that we can handle things. Turn around quickly. Trust in the Lord always. Our only comfort is the Lord.
