CARE TO BELIEVE

These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:31 NKJ)

Jesus did a lot of things all for the purpose of helping them believe that He was the Christ, the Son of the Living God. It was important that they grasped that one truth because everything that they had ever been looking for was fulfilled in that truth. They knew what the Christ, and of the promises concerning the Messiah, was all about. If they grasped that, they could have life in His name.

Do we care to believe this? Everyone cares about life, but not everyone cares about the life that is in Christ Jesus. It is important that we care to believe every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. If it is written in His word, then it is for us. If we don’t understand it, we have the opportunity to get understanding. After all, it has been given to us to understand the truth.

If the truth bothers us, then we are the ones who need to adjust. People run into all sorts of problems when they try to adjust the truth to fit their thinking rather than adjusting their thinking to fit the truth. It is never comfortable to be confronted with the truth and find yourself not liking it.

The truth has a great deal of power. It will set us free if we let it. If we flee it, we end up in bondage. Adam and Eve needed only to stay in the truth. Cain did not like the truth and he killed his brother. The hall of faith is full of people who bounced off the truth a time or two, but cared enough to press on. The devil has a trophy room full of people who never cared to believe the truth and instead chose to believe a lie.

When angels appeared to the shepherds, they had a choice. If they cared to believe the angels they would see the miracle child. When that same child rose from the dead, it was an angel that once again made the announcement. If they cared to believe they could behold the miracle. Thomas doubted right up until He saw for himself. Once he saw, he was hooked. It is important here to note that he cared enough to see for himself.

So in all things, we need to ask ourselves if we care to believe. Today I was doing some plumbing and it was not going as great as I would like. I was in fact becoming more than a little disgruntled with the whole thing. I doubted that I would even have it working again by the end of the day. Then I caught myself thinking and feeling like that. I responded by doing some very loud declarations of what was mine in Christ and what I was not going to put up with any longer. Needless to say, things leveled off and I finished the job. I made the decision that I cared more about the truth than I did about the circumstances. We have to care enough to do what it takes to make what we know is true overrule all of those other things that we encounter in life.
