CAREFULLY GUARD
With the help of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard what has been entrusted to you. (2 Timothy 1:14 NLT)
From time to time it is good to take inventory of the treasures in our lives. You know, we tend to guard more carefully what is precious to us. If we take money out of our pockets on a windy day we tend to be careful to hold on to it more tightly. If it were to blow away, we would be quickly running after it. Well, at least I know I would, I cannot speak for you. The same goes for other things in our lives that we hold near and dear.
Now, let’s consider the greatest treasure of all time the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. How closely do we guard it? How careful are we to protect the truth that God reveals to us? Is it a treasure that we will chase after when we realize that an unholy wind has taken it away from us?
For instance, God has called us all to fellowship and He leads us to the place he wants us. Still you can hear people say that they can go anywhere because it is all the same. Or they will say they do not need to go anywhere at all because God is all they need. Well then I guess if the wind blows our money away we should have the same attitude. We can find more why worry.
God has also called us to be Holy as He is Holy and He told us that people would know us by our love. So when we fail to love and become faultfinders, critics, and gossips are we appalled that we allowed the devil to gain ground and repent and get back on track, or do we justify it by saying that no one is perfect. If that is the case, then if someone robs our house we should not be surprised or upset. After all, no one is perfect.
Jesus revealed the way of abundant life to us all. The Holy Spirit came to enable us to experience every good thing of God. If we see God’s word for what it really is, we will guard it with our very lives. Sadly, we are all guilty of letting a little truth slide from time to time. Even sadder is the fact that we can get so good at letting it slide that what once was a rare occurrence begins to be a regular occurrence and we can rationalize most anything away.
God has some things in store for His people that will require us not only to guard the truth, but also to make room for more and more. In order to guard and get more, we need to hunger for this treasure more than anything else in our lives. God is prepared to prove His word to all who will hunger and thirst after it. Those who will say, “more Lord, please more,” will not be disappointed.
Those who refuse to guard what they have and hunger for more will find themselves very empty and very weak. Wherever you are today, know this. God is faithful and true and He is just as able to restore, as He is to carry you further into His truth. Just ask.
