CASUAL WON'T CUT IT

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord you must continue to follow Him. (Col. 2:6)

God is interested in more than a casual relationship. He invested way too much in us to settle for a casual commitment. As Paul states in the first chapter of Colossians, we have been transferred into the kingdom of God’s dear Son. Is it unreasonable for God to expect us to show up?

Casual relationships produce very little fruit. People who are casual about things can easily let them go. How often do you see people who are caught up in a relationship where one party is committed and the other is casual? This is not just in couples but it all things. When people were cheated by investment schemes, the cheater was casually involved with the investor, while the invested was totally committed. And of course, in personal relationships, if a man and a woman are only casually committed the relationship is easily derailed.

It stands to reason then, that a casual commitment to God is not going to be a strong one. God is always the same and will do His part, but we will never stand with only a casual relationship.

As a rule, a casual relationship is dependent upon what a person can get out of it. When people are casual in their relationship with God their commitment is based on how well God performs. If he is doing well things are great. In other words, when we are getting what we want there is no God like our God. When God is not performing up to our expectations, doubt takes over and a gaping hole is there for the enemy to destroy our faith.

On the other hand, when a person is committed to someone, they only desire the person not just what they can get from the person. When we are truly committed to God, we are content with Him, not what He does or does not do. We know that He is for us and has good plans for us!

Recently God spoke to me about His love and how it is like a seed searching for soil to grow in. He watches over it looking for people who will water it so it can produce the harvest that He intends for it to produce. As we become confident in His love, we learn to depend upon it and upon Him. We cannot be casual in developing this dependence. Confidence in His love causes us to overcome and conquer, because above all we know that our Father loves us. Remember the confidence Jesus had in His Father’s love. That confidence enabled Him to declare that His Father would never leave Him or let Him down.

Remember that a lack of love for or confidence in the love of another is usually one of the first things mentioned when a relationship begins to dissolve. The CEV bible tells us in Colossians 3:14 that Love is more important than anything else. It is what ties everything completely together. I pray that we all will resolve not to settle for a casual relationship with God. Casual will not cut it and casual will not accomplish what God has called us to. If we are going to reveal God to a world lost in uncommitted lives, we are going to need to display the powerful kind of love that grows by the power of God. Get that seed in you and water it till it grows so big it cannot be missed.
