CHECK YOUR AIM

So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up. (Romans 14:19)

Another version of this verse exhorts us to pursue the things that make for peace and to edify one another. I think that once we really catch the drift of all God promises us when are in harmony with Him, we will be more conscious of our aim and the things we pursue.

When I was a young boy and we would go hunting, there was usually a main object of our pursuit. However, I am sad to say, that at the same time we looked for a particular game we would also aim at most anything that moved. One time in particular that I remember, we were hunting ducks. I had crawled on my belly for a long ways to get up close to a dam and then as I came over the top the ducks flew. I jumped up and blasted away. After a few shots I saw that the others in the hunting party were running for cover over on the other side of the dam. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and we were able to have a good laugh. If nothing else, that trip taught me to watch where I was aiming.

This scripture tells us that we should aim for harmony, and that we should try and build each other up. Our aim should be the same whether we are in the presence of one another or away from one another. In other words, our words concerning people should be aimed at harmony no matter where we are. After all, what is the final result if we build someone up to their face, and then tare them down behind their backs. We all know the answer to that. We can mark one of for the devil if we don’t watch our aim all the time.

Until God began to instruct me on this idea of harmony, I have never noticed just how much He said about it in His word. But now it seems that I am finding passages that are linked to this idea all over the place and each show how harmony pleases God.

Remember, God is love and love creates harmony. When I focus on the love I have for my wife, the result will be sweet harmony. On the other hand, if I focus on something that in my opinion is wrong with her actions or words, the result is a note out of tune. If I am wise I will get back my focus to aim for harmony and build our relationship. If I am foolish, and aim for my own way, well we all know the outcome of that.

The church is the body of Christ. Therefore, God is telling us to aim for harmony in all our relationships. If each of us brings harmony to our times of fellowship and we are determined to build each other up we will bless God, and His presence will be powerfully manifest. If we don’t, then we only have ourselves to blame if we miss His best plans for us.

This is just as true whether we are alone with God, or in our own homes with family, or out on the streets. God’s presence and His anointing flow wherever His people are in harmony with Him. So let’s all ask God to help us to aim for harmony and focus on building each other up.
