CHILDLIKE FAITH
The Lord protects those with childlike faith. (Psalm 116:6a NLT)
I am certain that most if not all have heard the term, “second childhood.” Well, as I read this psalm, I decided that I am in at least my third childhood. You see, I was born and that was my first childhood. I was raised by great parents and I trusted them to take care of things. Over time, I grew up and became wise and had my own input on things. I did okay, but it was not nearly so simple of a life as it was when I was a child and mom and dad took care of me.
No doubt everyone has had the same experience! Instead of life being simpler like we think it will be when we get to make our own decisions, we find out that growing up is not all that it is cracked up to be. It is a lot easier when we do not have to be responsible for our care or our actions for the most part. It is then that we learn that life can be a bit of a struggle.
Well, I did all of that, and one day I hit my second childhood. When I was born again, I found childlike faith. I was so glad to trust the Lord to guide my life. It was great to have Him do the worrying and the problem solving. There is however a force that challenges us to grow up even in our faith. The Bible tells us to grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, but it never tells us to lose our childlike faith.
So what happens? Well, I believe that religion happens! Religious ideas exalt themselves against childlike faith, and we fall for it. We get to thinking we know some things and the next thing we know we trust what we know more than we trust the One who knows everything. Well, there goes our child hood!
Fortunately, it does have to stay that way. We can be born again, again! Now don’t misunderstand this. I am not saying we grow out of our salvation; we just begin to miss things when we lose our simple trust in God. I am talking about the joy of another childhood. I am talking about entering once again into a childlike faith in God.
Childlike faith is the kind of faith that God intends for us to have and hold onto for all of our lives. Childlike faith trusts completely. Childlike faith does not withhold anything. Childlike faith does not question. Childlike faith simply believes!
God truly does protect those with childlike faith. When we lose our childlike faith, God has to spend way too much time protecting us from ourselves. With childlike faith, we just stay close to Him. When we become wise in our own eyes, God is always having to gather us in. With childlike faith, God can teach us new and wonderful things and we will freely enter in to them. Childlike faith allows God to lead and does not worry. If you have grown out of childlike faith, let today be a day of renewal. Doesn’t that feel good?
