CHOOSE IRON
And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. (Daniel 2:42 NKJ
In this passage of scripture, Daniel is telling the king about his dream and what it meant. He points out the strength of this particular kingdom but makes note that because it is divided; part iron and part clay; part strong and part week, it is not going to hold together. This caused me to consider the state of my toes.
You see, Jesus has given us all we need in order to live and move in His indestructible kingdom. He established it and said, “This is the way. Walk in it.” With this in mind, we must consider what kind of feet we are walking on.
I believe we all have iron areas and we all have clay areas. We have places where we are pretty strong and immovable when it comes to the Kingdom of God and we have places where we have to admit that we crumble like brittle clay.
God brought to my mind the fact that we all want to grab a hold of someone or something of iron when we feel things start to crumble. You know, when things are not going well and despair starts to set in, we become much more open to what God can do for us. Notice, I said we become open to what God can do for us. We are not necessarily more open to being transformed by His word, we just want Him to do something for us.
God also pointed out to me that with clay, if you add a little water, you can soften it and re-mold it so it will hold together at least for a while. I wonder if we are not sometimes guilty of getting a little water of the Word so we can reform the clay; not enough to make it into iron, but just enough so it will at least look better.
The kingdom that Jesus came and established is all iron. It is set on the solid rock and it is indestructible. This is the kingdom that He established for one and for all. The clay just is not going to cut it. The other thing about clay is that if it crumbles enough it just ends up as dust in the wind. Why is it that we are willing to allow clay areas to continue to exist in our lives? Why don’t we just get rid of the clay as it becomes visible and take on the iron that will not crumble?
I think it is because we simply are not convinced that the Kingdom of God is really sufficient for everything in the here and now. We still think that there are some things that require our clay feet in order for them to work right. Of course these are the things that are always crumbling; so go figure! So we have a choice between that which will never fail, and those things that are sure to fail. I believe the Lord would say, “Choose iron.”
