CLING TO THE KING
Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father. (John 20:17)
Nearly twenty-five years ago I met Jesus and entered the Kingdom of God. During that time I have come to enjoy His amazing kingdom immensely. When I first entered it, I did not know my way around at all. I had no idea where anything was for sure. In fact, the only thing I really knew was that the one who opened the door for me was the key and so I just wanted to get to know Him more. Every one who has been around me for a while knows that my pat answer is always that there is more to Jesus!
Over the years following Jesus around, I have learned some things concerning the Kingdom of God and found that it is a pretty amazing place and it is full of everything anyone could ever want for a great life.
Oddly enough, I have also discovered that it is possible to have the things of the kingdom distract from the King Himself. Yes a person can get so caught up in what God does and what God provides that the very one who does everything ends up being neglected. When you think about it, this has been a problem since the beginning of mankind.
One thing I did when I first met the Lord was to ask Him to please not allow me to go back to where I was. I believe He has answered that prayer quite often, because whenever I get too distracted I get very lonely for Him. One of the first choruses I wrote to the Lord has a line that says, “I don’t want to live if I can’t have You.” There was a time when I wondered about that line because I knew He would never leave me. Now I see that it would certainly be possible to crowd my life so much with the things of His kingdom that I could neglect Him.
The solution that I have come up with is to cling to the king. After Jesus resurrection when Mary came to Him, He told her not to cling to Him right then. He did not tell her to never cling to Him; He just wanted her to wait until He had ascended to His Father and our Father.
Well, I hope you know the good news that He has not only ascended to the Father but He has also come to dwell in us. So we can cling to Him now. No! We must cling to Him now. More than ever, we need more of Him. The more we understand the Kingdom of God, the more we need to stay close to the King so that the things of the Kingdom bring glory to the King. The Kingdom without the King is like the child of a wealthy person who has everything but would rather just have his parents. Consequently, all that he has ends up being destructive to his life. The same is true of allowing the things of the kingdom of God to distract us from our Father. Many wonderful Christians have fallen as a result of losing sight of the King.
On this resurrection day let’s renew our resolve to always cling to the King.
