And this is the way to have eternal life--to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. (John 17:3 NLT)

If you wonder what Christianity is all about, this is it. It is all about knowing God. It is all about drawing closer to Him through His Son Jesus Christ, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Whether we come to him alone or with a few or with many, the focus is the same. We must know Him. It is not about Him making us feel good. It is about us getting so close to Him that His goodness removes everything else.

I think that we forget that He is the same all the time and that it is up to us to draw near to Him. We know that He is always near. He is as close as the mention of His name. Still, He says that we should draw near to Him. He is God and He does not change. He has promised us much and blessed us so much, but it is nothing compared to what is available if we will just draw near.

I was reading about God’s covenant with Abraham, and I noticed that God’s side contained all the promises. All Abraham had to do was show that he accepted the covenant. No doubt circumcision seemed pretty extreme to his 14-year-old son and all the other men, but in comparison to what God offered it was nothing. A few days to heal and all of that would be behind them, while the promises of God were without end.

Just as it was for Abraham, so it is for us. We simply need to remain in covenant with Him. We need to draw close. When we gather to worship the Lord, it is not to get stuff from Him. It is to get to Him, to bless Him and love Him. We should rush to God like people rushing from a burning building. We don’t need to worry about there being a bottle neck at the door or about getting trampled, God throws the gates wide open and welcomes everyone who comes.

Still, we often hesitate. We stand near the outer court and think that God is going leave everyone else to come and make us comfortable. It is not about us being comfortable. It is about us getting close to God! He said that we could learn from little children. Look what they will do in order to get close to you. If one thing doesn’t work they will try another. We should be the same when it comes to drawing near to God. We should be creative.

There is always a great release whenever someone just forgets about themselves and throws themselves at God. Heaven rejoices whenever we finally say to God, “It is not about me God; it is about you. I just want more of you. Nothing else Lord, just more of you.”
