CLOTHE YOURSELVES

Since God chose you to be the holy people whom He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12 NLT)

We may as well accept the fact that God has made us responsible for putting into action the things He provides for us. In the Psalms we are told there is a table prepared for us in the presence of our enemies. It is a wonderful buffet, but like any buffet, the food does not jump on you as you walk by. I jokingly say that there are some foods that talk to me from the refrigerator however the only way they will get in my mouth is if I grab them. The Holy Spirit really does speak to us reminding us of God’s ways, but it is our responsibility to use the ability God has placed in us.

As I thought of putting on the things of God, I began to sing a song saying, “Holy God, make me holy…merciful God make me merciful too. Loving God make me loving… Lord I want to be like you.” It seemed with each phrase I said, the Lord said, “I have” and it the end He said, “Do it!”

We have been given all the tools and the ability to do and be all that God has called us to do and be, all we have to do is choose life. In His presence there is such pleasure and peace. We are continually reminded to be full of joy and thankfulness. Why would the Lord tell us to be full of joy if there is nothing to be joyful about? Why would God tell us to give thanks, if there were nothing to be thankful for?

There is a continuous return on all that that we sow into the kingdom of God. Every second of tenderhearted mercy we extend is multiplied back to us many times. The same is true of kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. There is so much that the Lord has set before us, all we have to do is put it on.

We all have favorite things in our closet that we like to wear don’t we? If you are like me, you also have things in your closet that have not been worn for some time! Well, we can pick and choose when it comes to our clothes, but we need to be careful about being selective when it comes to the things of God.

We cannot decide that we don’t want to be merciful on certain days or to certain people. We cannot decide that today will be my day off from being patient! Perhaps I should say that we should not, because as we all know we certainly are capable of leaving some of the best and most beneficial things hanging in the closet.

The truth is if Christ is in us, all we really need to do is set Him free to shine through us. “Who the Son sets free is free in deed!” We are free to walk in Him or to walk away from Him. However, our real peace and contentment comes from wrapping ourselves up in Him and displaying His joy to the world around us. This makes us a blessing to others and opens the doors for God’s blessings to flow to us.
