COME AND SEE
He said to them, "Come and see."
The first two things that Jesus says in the gospel of John are, “What do you seek” and “Come and see.” He saw the two disciples of John following him because John had said to them, “Behold the Lamb of God.” Jesus turned to them and asked them what they wanted; they asked Him where He was staying; and He said, “Come and see.” So they came and they saw and they stayed.
As I was praying, I saw a small hole in a hide that a person could look through. As I continued to look at this hole, it grew shut and I could no longer see through it. I was reminded that the tabernacle that Israel traveled with in the wilderness was made of hides and that no one was allowed to enter except Moses and who He allowed in. It also came to my mind that the veil was torn from top to bottom when Jesus was crucified providing open access to the Holiest place for all who would believe.
As I considered all this, it occurred to me that we are often guilty of peeking in at the things of God rather than entering in. The religious people of Jesus’ time refused to enter, instead they just peeked and looked for faults and flaws in what Jesus taught. From time to time some were persuaded, but most of them just wanted Him gone. This broke Jesus’ heart, but He just kept following the plan. He followed the Truth because He knew He was the Truth Who came to set men free.
I see in these two disciples a picture of two men who were offered a peek into the Kingdom of God. They could have just responded to John with a comment like, “That’s cool,” and not moved. If they would have they would have missed what Jesus was doing. However, they chose to follow Jesus and when He noticed them He asked them what they wanted. They could have just turned around, but they opened the hole a little further and asked Him where He was staying. Have you ever wondered why they asked something like that? Well, Jesus simply suggested that they should come and see for themselves, and so they did. They opened up the hole a little further by following Him. We don’t know what they found or what they saw, but in the end; they tore that hole wide open and stayed with Jesus.
What does this have to do with us? We start our walk with God peeking into His Kingdom through Jesus Christ. If we are wise we tear it wide open and stay with Jesus. As we walk with Him, there are things that come up in our lives and we have opportunities to go through with Him or back away. We have opportunities for victories as Jesus says, “Come and see my solution.” We can come and see and stay, or we can back away. Just remember that Jesus never stops offering the opportunity to come and see. The question is what are we looking for? Are we looking for where He is staying? Come and see things His way!
