COME UP

Why are you so sad? You have me. (1 Samuel 1:8 ERV)

This particular word was spoken to Hannah, mother of Samuel, by her husband Elkanah, in an attempt to comfort her because she had no children. As I read it I thought of how often the Lord must think this very thing when He sees us floundering. How often would things be made right if we just learned to respond with, “I have God?” This or that is too much, but I have God. I will not fear; I have God.

I was reminded of Israel as they would wander around the base of the mountain but did not want to go up. They wanted Moses to go and hear from God for them. The problem is, that with no personal word, the words lose their glow. Moses would go up and come down and they would say, “Oh yes we will do as the Lord says.” Did they? Well, sometimes for a while, but never for long.

God really wanted them to come up, but when they chose not to, He did His best to give them the keys to life. If we will admit it, we are often guilty of hanging around near the mountain hoping to get a word that will give us relief. We may hear it and even parrot it, but it is more our head than our heart. Because we do not go up ourselves, we begin to question and doubt the word and even excuse the word and the source of the word. In other words, a person may give us perfect revelation, but because we will not go up and get the understanding we never see the fruit and may even blame the source. The problem with that is that we are really blaming God. He wants us to come and see for ourselves.

Remember when Israel wanted a king and Samuel did not like the idea? God told Samuel not worry, just give them what they want. God went on to say that, “They are not rejecting you Samuel. They are rejecting Me!” If we do not keep climbing, we end up on the escalator headed down. It is so smooth that we may not even realize it at first. In fact we might just look at people headed up with little or no thought about our own direction.

God’s desire is that everyone gets to the top. He wants us to experience the ecstasy of His presence and then take those seeds and produce the fruit for which they are intended. Then we climb to the next level and do the same thing. Level after level we are to keep climbing. The Lord reminded me that Children are climbers. This is another good reason for becoming as a child and climbing up, up, up, in faith.

Recently my son told me the idea of texting with a smart phone is to get close to the letters you want and the phone will correct for you. I thought how much that could apply to moving up and getting close and allowing the Holy Spirit to correct and direct us.

Finally, there was an old rock song that said, “Let me take you higher!” God is calling us to come up and keep coming up. Each level prepares us for more of His life in us.
