COMFORT OF HIS LOVE

Think about what we have in Christ: the encouragement he has brought us, the comfort of his love, our sharing in his Spirit, and the mercy and kindness he has shown us. (Philippians 2:1)

There is something about the sustaining power of love that really is not easily explained until it is experienced. Once a person has experienced it they recognize it immediately. In fact the mere mention of it by another instantly produces emotions and reminders that again are hard to explain.

That is truly a paragraph that is either clear as mud to the reader or is producing emotions of total understanding and stirring up memories for others. Here is the deal; there is just something about love. You hear stories of people who survive horrendous situations and their explanation was holding on to the love of someone at home. You hear of people who risk and even forfeit their lives for another because of great love. The list goes on and on. What is this love?

What kind of love does God have for us that He would give His son? What kind of love does Jesus have for us that He would die on a cross for us? What kind of love does the Holy Spirit have for us that He patiently waits and draws us in anticipation of our giving into this great love? This is the comfort of His love that we are talking about.

As we talked before about the encouragement we have in Christ, we all know that we receive the greatest encouragement when we know that the encourager loves us! How important is it then that we know the comfort of God’s love?

If we will hold on to the knowledge of how much God loves us, it will pull us through many impossible situations and circumstances. Things may not always go just the way we want them to, but that does not change how much God loves us.

Sometimes people will fail us and other times we will fail us and God. The temptation in those moments is to think that somehow God must have backed away and that our failure must have blocked His love, but that just is not possible. Those are the times that we can must allow that great comfort and love of God squeeze the doubt out of us.

His love in itself is the greatest source of encouragement. Even if things are bad and if it seems God is not speaking to you, if you will just think of His love for you, suddenly it will be the only thing that matters, and when that happens things just fall into place!

Again, if you understand this, your mind may be wandering to His wonderful love like mine is right now. There is no explaining how it works; it just does. God is, and when you know that He is, explanations become less important because experience says it best.

So take some time and think of the comfort of His love. It is a good thing!
