COMING HOME

But He said, "On the contrary, blessed (happy, favored by God) are those who hear the word of God and continually observe it." (Luke 11:28 AMP)

As I settled now for the night thanking God for the day and carousing through the thoughts and conversations of the week with God; that is me wondering what He has in mind for today, He simply said rest. Just, rest! So that is what I did. Well of course I tried to get more out it, but it was pretty simple; just rest! Nothing deep there!
This morning this verse nestled into my heart. Isn’t it something the way His words just bring us home. He speaks and the moment He speaks we know He is speaking to us. The key is observing what He has spoken.
In other words we need to stop and observe what has just happened. Like physical food, if we never digest it, if it just passes through or back up, we get no nourishment and no good healthy benefits from it. Jesus said that the blessings come from focusing on Him and His word.
Moses turned and looked at the burning bush and as a result He got the message. If we turn and look at the living word, we receive the benefits. His word is our home spot. It is our safe spot. It is our spot of eternal nourishment. The new living translation calls this putting the word into action.
Even a quick visit is beneficial. I often check in on my mother to make sure she is ok. It is just quick stop. She is always glad and she always says, “When will I see you again?” And then she adds, “Well I will be here!” That makes me think of God. He is always present. He loves to have us check in. When I stop to see mom, if there is more that needs to be taken care of, I take care of it. When I turn to God, if there is more that needs to be done, I do my best to do that too.
Before we moved back to my home town, we had to come home on purpose. We did not just accidentally show up. When it comes to a relationship with God we need to be intentional as well. We can’t just stop in when it is convenient or when life is not convenient. Of course God is always near, but unless we make Him our priority, we will seldom stop in.
The good news is that it is never a bad time to get started on the right path. It is always good to set our hearts to seek the Lord. When we do, we will find that He is waiting. When we get comfortable with showing up, we make it point to stay longer. Sometimes when I stop in to check on my mother, I just sit and watch the ball game with her for a while. She does not remember but she enjoys it for the moment. Take a moment with God now! Make it a habit!
