COMMIT
Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him, and He will help you. (Ps. 37:5 NLT)
Have you ever committed yourself to the Lord? Have you kept that commitment? Do you think it is possible to accept the salvation that the Lord offers without really committing yourself? We often think we have done what we need to do when we see our need for salvation and ask the Lord to forgive our sins and come into our lives. We have somehow come to the conclusion that once we do that, the rest is up to Him!
We expect Him to keep us on track and we figure if He is not telling us any different then we must be going the right way. We really do not take much time to listen as we are telling Him what we want but we figure He is God and He will be able to get through to us if He wants to! I believe we are all guilty of many of these thoughts at one time or another. I also believe that most of us really are sincere in our faith as far as it goes. But as far as it goes is not really what God is interested in. His desire is that we go all the way.
For this reason we have billed this Sunday at Hosanna as commitment Sunday. Of course we will all have our choice as to how and what we commit, but then that is the truth in our everyday life with or without Jesus. We choose what we commit to and our choices determine the course of our life. God has a plan for everyone, and His plan is for good. He will not force His plan on us, but if we will commit ourselves to seeing His perfect will in our lives we will dwell safely in the land and prosper. (Vs. 3)
Committing and trusting are like soup and sandwich. They are good on their own, but best when they are together. It is good to trust God. However, often time’s people will put their trust in God without committing themselves for the long haul. When this happens, time has a tendency to cause the trust to fade. That is when you hear people say that they trusted God and it just never worked out. In those instances we never know how close we were to the perfect outcome of things when we quit trusting.
Likewise, there may be things that we commit to God in prayer. Whether it is a need, a child, a friend, an enemy or whatever it may be. Once we have committed or presented it to God if we do not trust Him with it, it just becomes another thing that we have listed but then we go ahead and handle our own way.
So you see we must commit and then trust. And when we say we are trusting, we must commit ourselves for the long haul with God. We must commit like the three men in the furnace. We must be so certain of God’s power and wisdom that we do not falter even when it is hot. We need to understand that we should be as committed to God as we want Him to be committed to us. To many of us have expected Him to do both parts. When we once understand how much our commitment determines the fulfillment of God’s promises in our lives, we will be committed, trusting, children like never before. Make this your commitment day.
