COMPARED TO WHAT
But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. (Philippians 3:7 NKJ)
There is a transformation of values that takes place as we draw near to the Lord. It happens at different speeds and sometimes changes directions, but all the same, a relationship with God changes things.
Do you remember a time when there was no cost too great to pay just to know Him more? There is a time for everyone when we are so grateful to know the truth that we are ready to cast aside everything else and follow the Lord. These attitudes often subside, and in many instances it is a good thing at least for a while, because people often move in directions God never intended in the midst of those feelings. These desires should not die; they just need direction from the Lord as they progress.
Ultimately, if all goes well we come to a place of steady pursuit of the will of our Lord. Unfortunately this is not always the case and people who at one time were hard after the Lord, cool right down and seem to lose their compassion for the Lord completely. Some settle into a religious attitude, some just return to where they were before, and still others enter into a throne of judgment against anything that creates emotion or passion for Christ. Remember to never lose hope for any of these people. God is able to restore!
Paul ran into every manner of resistance that there was. He was after all, the chief persecutor turned chief lover of Christ. He threw down everything and never looked back. Well not much anyway. Of course he did everything according to what the Lord Himself had told Him. There is no such thing as too much zeal for the Lord, it is only when it is carried out without the Lord’s guidance that it becomes a problem.
Paul ran into people who started out well and then backed away and others who started out for Christ and ended up as enemies of the cross. He ran into people who wanted to kill him from the start as well as many who loved the Christ they saw in Him and kept the faith to the very end. There were even some who preached Christ for the wrong reasons but Paul said as long as Christ is preached that is what matters most.
The thing that I want to make sure of is that I do not allow anything to keep me from moving closer to Him. Compared to what is ahead, nothing behind is worth holding on to especially if it is going to hold us back. We do not need to fear where God may be leading us. If He is leading then He is with us and for us and if God is for us; well you know the rest.
God is doing some new things in the body of Christ. I believe he is responding to the hunger of believers everywhere. Some are being surprised at the things he is doing and others see it as just the right fit. God supplies our needs and sometimes they are not the needs we were thinking of. Just remember that nothing compares to the surpassing greatness of knowing the love and the power of God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
