CONFIDENT

Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will know no fear. Even if they attack me, I remain confident.(Psalm 27:3 NLT)

Just how confident are we of God’s love, care, and concern for us? It is of utmost importance that we establish our confidence in Him. Our confidence cannot be in our faith, or the faith of others. It cannot be in our bible study or prayer time. Our confidence must be in God.

Psalm 27 begins by declaring that God is our light and salvation, so why should we be afraid. He protects us from danger. When evil people come to destroy me,(and they will try)when they attack,(and they will) they will stumble and fall. Now confidence is building and the Psalm declares that even if an army surrounds me, my heart will know no fear. Even if they attack I will remain confident.

Wow, this is easy to say! But can we do it? Yes we can, if we keep our confidence in Christ. We build our confidence as we trust in God. First in small things and then bigger and bigger things. It will not work to just read the bible and say that we like what it says. Many struggle and suffer defeat, because they never allow the truth to come alive and active in their lives.

Jesus told us there would be enemies. He said there would be people who would come against us, lie about us, and some would even desire to deliver us to death. He also said to fear not! It is easy not to be afraid or tremble when we know the enemy exists, but we are not experiencing the attacks. During these times we build our confidence by declaring that God is keeping them away, and giving Him thanks and praise for it. This way, when the enemy actually does make an appearance, we have more confidence to declare that they will stumble and fall because the Lord is on our side. As we see the Lord working in, and around us, we become even more confident as long we continue to be built up in our faith.

The problems that some run into result from different misconceptions. Some Christians do not acknowledge that we are even in a war. So no matter what happens they assume it is just what God wanted all the time. They don’t expect victory till Jesus returns, and consequently live in a lot of defeat. Others get the idea that the enemy will never even come near, so that when he does, they crumble. Others may believe that the enemy could show himself, but would never dare to attack. So when the attack comes, they tip over. It is important that our confidence in God remains the same in the worst of situations as it is in the best.

We cannot base our confidence in God on our own ideals of how He should work. We must base it on what He says. Then we know that no matter what level the battle rages, the victory is still the same. We need not fear. God has not changed. If the army shows up, so what! Even if they attack, so what! We will remain confident. Why? Because we have read the bible and prayed and fasted….NO! Because we are confident in God. And because we are confident in God, we read the Word, pray, fast, praise, worship, and desire to draw closer each day.
