CONTROLLING THE TONGUE

We all make many mistakes, but those who control their tongues can also control themselves in every other way. (James 3:2 NLT)

Have you ever said anything and wished you hadn’t? Unless you are perfect, the answer to that question is a great big yes. Speaking without thinking is such an easy thing to do, but getting those words back after saying them is an entirely different story. God tells us that if we will learn to control our tongues we can also control ourselves in every other way. Would it be wrong to say that as we control ourselves we also control our lives? Could it be possible that by controlling our words we would not only control what comes out of us, but we would also have an effect on what comes into our lives?

Scripture tells us that God watches over His Word to perform it. So then, if we speak His words, those are the things that will be performed. God is not going to perform words that are not His or that do not line up with His will. So it would seem that our words can either calm a storm or stir one up. Our words can deliver or they can imprison. Our words can steal or they can give. Our words can kill or give life.

How much will it change our lives if we willing to change the way we speak? God says that we can make a large horse turn around and go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. We are often deceived into believing that a little word or two won’t make that much difference. The truth is, just a small word from our mouth can make that big horse take off and run away. I have been on horse when it bolted and even with a bit in its mouth it was hard to stop or turn. Still, if you keep the horse under control and don’t let him bolt, he will turn and go wherever you want. Have your words ever caused a run away? Has something small ever gotten completely out of control just because you did not control your tongue? Once again, the answer is more than likely yes.

We are also given the picture of tiny rudder turning a ship, or tiny spark burning down an entire forest. Our words can destroy our life or they can be turned into a means of creating the abundant life Jesus promised. Are there any ships in your life that are headed in a direction different from what you know they should be? Well now is a good time to put that rudder to use. Begin to turn that ship around. You may not see it do an immediate power turn, or then again you may. The important thing is that you realize it needs to change direction. Getting control of our tongues will steer our lives moment by moment as well as over the long haul.

Lord, help us to control our tongues. Help us to hear the words we say, and to see what direction those words are taking us. Help us to see what those words are releasing into our lives and the lives of others. Help us to turn those horses that are out of control, and to keep the ship on your course. May the only fires we start be fires of the Holy Spirit. Help us Lord to build our lives and the lives of those around us. In Jesus Name we pray.
