CROSS IT
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18 NKJ)
As you know, we are currently in what could be called the season of the cross. However, it is a shame to limit the power of the cross to a seasonal advertising campaign. It is also sad that to all appearances more attention is given to the death on the cross than is given to the power of the resurrection. After all, the cross is the power of God to those who are working out the fullness of salvation.
As I sought the Lord concerning what He was trying to show me in this, I first had the thought; “cross it off.” Not to cross the thought off, but a means of using the power of God to cross things out of our lives. For instance, if a person is dealing with bitterness or unforgiveness, or any other exhausting mental or physical battle, why not cross it off? Allow the power that was released on that cross to release you as well.
We all know that there are many things that we just cannot deal with on our own. If we will learn to cross it off, or take it to the power that the cross represents (Jesus) we will win, if we see it as foolish to depend on the Lord Jesus Christ, then it will eat us up. We perish a little with each lost battle.
The cross is not just something to wear around our neck, or hang in the church, or on our walls; it is a reminder of the power of God. Some people see it only as a place to hang Jesus and never see the power of Him getting off. There is no doubt He died on that cross, but He is seated at the right hand of our Father now. He saw the joy beyond the cross. He took the whole world’s sin to the cross to make the way for us to cross everything off in our lives. Why should we cease to access the power the cross represents after coming to Him to be made clean.
The next thought was that the cross is like a bridge and we should continually cross it. It is like a bridge over troubled waters and it will ease our minds. That song held a lot of truth that was established long before it was written.
On the cross Jesus released us from the power that the natural holds over us. He released us from every manner of foolishness that causes us to doubt God. He transformed us from being an enemy of the cross to a carrier of the cross.
It was on the cross that Jesus shed the blood of the new and better covenant. Just as the cup and the bread are to be used to remember, so the cross is a reminder that victory was won there more than two thousand years ago. We do not have to sit in defeat. We have the power to cross over into victory at every turn. We have the power to cross off those things that hold us back. Instead of seeing the cross as a burden to be carried, we can now see that it is instrument to be used to accomplish the plan of God in our lives. It is a reminder of the power of God for the fullness of salvation.
