DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE
This I declare of the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God and I am trusting in Him. (Psalms 91:2 NLT)
In truth, it seems that most people are more interested in a declaration of independence that they are in a declaration of dependence! We often fool ourselves into thinking that we can do everything on our own. This in fact is the deception that the devil often uses to convince people that they don’t need Jesus. After all, the lie is that only weak people need the Lord, when the truth is that everyone needs the Lord. Unfortunately far to few receive that truth. People do perish due to a lack of knowledge.
This Psalm gives us a perfect example of what our declaration must be if we want the fulfillment of the Lord’s promises in our lives. We must declare that He alone is our refuge. How can He protect us if we choose another refuge? He is not going to force His way in and take over. If we seek safety in another place, we will obviously not enjoy the safety of His place. When the little pig chose the straw house, he did not enjoy the safety of the brick house! If we make anyone or anything other than God our god, we get the benefits of what we choose. They may even work out well for while, but God alone is eternal. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of God goes on forever.
So will we declare things that will last forever, or things that only last a little while? If our declaration is according to the word of God, then we should expect God to rescue us from every trap. When we make Him our refuge and place of safety, we make a declaration that puts God’s reputation on the line. How can He promise us something and then not do it? This is not manipulating God. This is simply trusting Him. We expect mere humans to be trustworthy, how can we think God would do any less?
Declaring the greatness of God also gives us confidence of His protection from the fatal plague. Hey, I know people get sick, but that does not change the word of God or how we are to apply it in our lives. We often spend more time reasoning why the word of God will not work than we do declaring that it does and that it will. I can assure you that God never questions His word. He will never tell you that it may not be true. Seems to me that the devil is the one that has always operated that way. You may declare that God will heal you, and the devil will tell you someone that did not get healed. You may declare that God will protect you and the devil will tell you who He did not protect. So what! What does that have to do with you? Put the devil in his place when he comes to exalt himself against the truth.
Read this Psalm for yourself and make your declaration of dependence upon the things of God. Then expect Him to prove Himself true and everything and everyone that does not agree a liar. If we will walk like this, we will behold the glory of God. If you think about it, this is actually what the founding fathers of America did. They declared independence from an earthly king and dependence upon the King of Kings. Some may not want to believe it, but it is that very thing that has allowed our country to thrive.
