DESIRE REQUIRED
So I beg you, dear brothers and sisters, because of the great mercy God as shown us, offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him--"an offering that is only for God and pleasing to Him. Considering what he has done, it is only right that you should worship him in this way. (Romans 12:1 ERV)
Salvation requires a desire to change, not just a desire to escape! In order to call upon the Lord in sincerity and truth, we must desire to change. If we have no desire to change, then we will just keep repeating the same things over and over. Yes, our status changes immediately, but our transformation requires dedication.
If there is no desire to change, when we run into mountains of resistance and opportunities to compromise what strength will we have? How will we cast down the accusations of enemy that we are failures and will never last if we had no real desire to last in the first place?
Only God can say whether or not we are sincere, but we know in our hearts what the case is. I know that I often asked God for help without ever making any commitment. That was because I had no desire to change; I only wanted to not be caught. I wanted whatever it was that posed an inconvenience to me to be removed.
Even when my eyes were opened to my need for salvation, my first desire was to escape. Fortunately, with that awareness I realized that a lot of things would need to change for me to stay out of the same trap. I asked God to never let me go back! Of course that simply gave Him something to remind me with, because it was still going require action along with desire on my part.
We must daily renew our desire. Every day there are opportunities to compromise. If we have no desire to overcome, we will have no resistance. If we do not resist, we will be crushed by condemnation. If we are crushed we may not bother to get up.
In wrestling, people often find themselves in a spot where they have to bridge up on the back of their heads in order to keep from being pinned. If they have strong enough neck muscles to combine with their skills, they can last a long time and even escape and reverse their position. The strength comes from practice and preparation. I did not wrestle, but for football, I bridged a multitude of hours in my years of practice because I needed a strong neck. I still have that strong neck because of it. It kept me from injury. I did it because I desired to succeed.
If we desire to overcome in our Christian life, then we will succeed because we will follow our desire to remain close to God. If we do not desire to remain close to God, how can we hope to succeed? He gives us strength not only to resist but also to reverse and overcome the enemy who wants only to destroy us. Stir up that desire that is in you. Ask for more. God is good.
