DEVELOPING DEPENDENCE
...and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the Lord...(2 Chronicles 13:18b)
Soon we will celebrate Independence Day; the day that our country declared its freedom. If we look at the history, we easily see that although they declared their independence from England, at the same time they clearly declared their dependence upon Almighty God to see them through and keep them strong. This plan obviously worked.
We can also see through history that there were times when we ignored God, but then we would catch ourselves and begin to rely on Him and back we would come. I believe we are in a time when we better renew our dependence on the Lord.
He is so good and so faithful. 2nd Chronicles 16:9 says that the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In other words, if we seek Him, we find Him. If we rely on Him we will not be disappointed. Blessed are they who put their trust in the Lord.
Once again we are reminded that we must become as little children. What is one great characteristic of children? They are totally dependent upon those who care for them. Even in their moments of rebellion, their true dependence surfaces when their independence gets them into trouble.
Perhaps the greatest thing that we can develop in our lives is an ever increasing dependence upon God. If only we can learn to depend on Him as much when all is well as we do when things are falling apart.
How often do we see people seeking prayer and people talking about praying and trusting God in the face of sickness or fearful situations, only to find the same people forgetting God when the problem has passed? Worse yet, we often see people blaming God when things did not go as they wanted.
Dependence on God keeps us in a state of either enjoying lap time with God or looking forward to the next opportunity to be there. Dependence on God keeps us continually needy. A little child may wander to the other end of the play ground, but will become desperate if they cannot find their mom or dad.
Dependence on God makes us very aware of where our help comes from. The more dependent we are upon God, the more certain we are of His presence and His willingness to show Himself strong on our behalf. The fact is that we all have someone or something that we depend on. Why not depend on the One who made all things? May we all become independent of the fear of being dependent on God! That is true independence!
