DEVELOPING GOOD SOIL

Then Jesus said to them, "If you can't understand the meaning of this parable, how will you understand all the other parables?" (Mark 4:13 NLT)

Soil is soil when it comes to soil. How is that for profound? Some soils are better for growing certain things and some soils are just better left alone. With scientific advances and fertilizers and such things, they can test and add things to increase production but in the end, the soil is what God made it to be. He put each soil where it was for a purpose and put in each soil what was best for His plans. There is one thing that we know is good for soil and that is to rest it. Seems like God mentioned that in His word too! So even though soil in itself cannot really be changed they go to great lengths to do all that they can in order to increase the harvest. In some cases if a person is determined to grow a certain crop, they will they will even travel great distances to acquire the ground that will grow that crop.

We could expand this and speak of oil and mineral exploration as well, but I think we can get a good enough picture to move on to the development of the most important soil, and that soil is our ground for the word and promises of God. Just as they now test soil to see what it is best for, or what it is lacking, or what will help it, we too must be willing to check our soil. Why should we check out soil? If we are unaware of any problem with our harvest or if we not interested in our harvest, we will not see any reason to check it. If we do not realize that the soil has anything to with anything why bother, right? A lot of people eat bread and think it just comes in plastic wrappers with no idea of what a wheat field is.

As a Christian, we have no excuse for being ignorant of the importance of our spiritual soil. Just as a farmer today who will not take care of his crops or his land cannot blame anyone but himself if he has no crop, so it is with Christians. We need to realize that we are the ground and that our ground can produce, but it is up to us to develop the soil. In order to develop the soil we must have a desire to produce a harvest. In order to have this desire we must recognize that perhaps our harvest is down. Then we must realize that we need to get it developed and do what it takes to develop it. When we realize the need, we must resist the tendency to blame someone or something else for our lack. We actually have perfect conditions for the best harvest at all times. So complaining about conditions or circumstances just will not work.

The truth is that the seed of God’s Word is always good. The Son is always perfect and shining. There is always just the right amount of rain waiting to be poured out. There is always shelter from the storms, and always perfect conditions for harvest.

So we need only to ask ourselves; can my soil benefit from some conditioning? Are there rocks to pick? Are there weeds that I am nurturing rather than getting rid of them? Are there things crowding out the good seed and robbing me of nutrients? Are there distractions that have become attractions that are robbing me of the good things of God? If there are, am I willing to put in the effort to develop that soil into soil that will produce a harvest? We can develop our soil. We were all made in God’s image and that means we can all produce the maximum harvest for our lives and for the kingdom of God.
