DID YOU KNOW

Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices. For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners. (Matthew 9:13 NLT)

This is another “Did you know” that we need to know. We have looked at telling about this New Life, so we would be reminded that this is and New Life. Then we answered a bit of the mystery of our value to God and how valuable our relationship with Him is to us. Today, let’s look at another important question. Did you know you were a sinner?
Jesus said that He came to call those who know the answer to this question, so it is a pretty important thing to know. It is one thing to know that you have done wrong things; everyone does wrong things! That is how we justify what we are doing wrong when we are doing it and excuse it when we are done.
Sin, on the other hand, is not excusable! At least that should be our perspective on it. David prayed that God would forgive him even for secret sins. I am not sure if he was talking about ones that he kept secret or just making sure he did not have any that he had not seen as clearly as God did. Either way, it is a great thing to pray. Search my heart oh God. Show me your ways!
The truth is that anything that is not in line with God is sin so we do well to line up our lives. Needless to say, it is a mission that will take our life time to accomplish, but it is accomplishable if we want it to be.
I believe that everyone who hears about salvation wants salvation. I also think that it is possible for people to want salvation and not necessarily see ourselves as sinners. I grew up in church and certainly wanted to end up in heaven and yes I suspected that the things I did wrong could be seen as sins; but I was able to put off really seeing things that way.
Of course that only works until you really see things for what they are. When I understood that I could not get to heaven without salvation and my sins stood between me and salvation; that was a revelation. It is true, that the truth sets us free.
Did you know that receiving all from God requires giving all to God? Even a little weight gets heavy if we carry it long enough. A little fear will wear us out. The smallest doubt leaves us standing outside of God best.
Paul recognized that he was the worst of all sinners. I think I was. If you understand what I am saying you are pretty sure you were. That is why there is such joy in knowing our sins are forgiven. It is not a question of who is worst; it is simply understanding that we have sinned and come short of the glory of God. It opens our eyes to Jesus saying go and sin no more.
