DIG A WELL

Abandoning that one, he dug another well, and the local people finally left him alone. So Isaac called it "Room Enough," for he said, "At last the Lord has made room for us, and we will be able to thrive."(Genesis 26:22 NLT)

In Proverbs 3, the Lord tells us that if we want a long and satisfying life, we are to closely follow His instructions. He specifically mentions loyalty and kindness, and then says that we should trust the Lord completely, putting Him first in everything we do.

Now, as I read through Genesis I am once again amazed at Esau giving up his birthright for some food and the Bible tells us that he was indifferent to the loss of the rights he had thrown away. (25:34) But then I think how often do I throw away something the Lord has promised me simply because I neglect or am indifferent to the instruction He offers. As we have been talking about leaving the past behind and taking a firm hold on our faith, and protecting the presence of God in our lives, this again challenges me to get as close to the Lord as I can and not to miss a thing that He has planned.

I believe that God gives us an example of what we can do in the story of Isaac as He moved about as the Lord led him. We are told that when a famine hit the Land, God appeared to Isaac and told him not to go to Egypt. He said if you do what I tell you I will be with you and bless you. There are times of famine in our lives and nothing is going right and we are tempted to go to Egypt. We are tempted to handle things the way we would without God. We are tempted to respond in our flesh and not by faith.

Well, Isaac did what God wanted him to do, and we are told that his crops were tremendous and he flourished while others were barely surviving. He flourished so much that the king came to make a treaty with him because he could see that God was with Isaac and he knew what happened to enemies of God. He also asked Isaac to go somewhere else. Isaac had such faith in God’s ability to take care of him wherever he was, that he moved on. And when he moved on, he dug wells. You always need water to survive. But every time he dug a well, the people in the land came and took it. Isaac did not give up. He just went and dug another well. He was so blessed that he just kept finding water, and the locals wanted it. Finally he dug one and they let him keep it. At this time Isaac declared that the Lord had finally made room for them.

I see this and I think of how often we tend to give up when what seemed like the perfect answer is not the final answer. I also think, wow! God was just revealing his favor for Isaac over and over in this new land. The people had to take note that everything they touched worked. I am encouraged that no matter what goes on, I need only to dig another well. I need only to go to the living water and keep on trusting God. I need to focus on what else God has for me and not be distracted by what I think is being taken away. God wants to reveal Himself to us and those around us. How about you? Is there a well that you need to dig today?
