DO NOT DESERT

Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. (Matthew 26:56)

It is easy to look at the disciples and ask how in the world they could have done such a thing as desert the Lord after all that He had done for them. Some might say that they did it because that was what scripture said, but the truth is they did it because they were scared and did not trust what Jesus said.

Now I do not blame them for being scared, but I would like to think I would not desert a friend in such a difficult spot. However, as I read this scripture I had to wonder how many times I have deserted Jesus; not in such obvious ways as the disciples did here, but in the every day circumstances of life. How often do we give up on the Word of God?

You see, giving up on His Word is the same as deserting Him. That is what happened to the disciples; they gave up on His Word! Praise the Lord, they made a wonderful recovery and later after receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, they turned the world up side down. That same power continues to flow today. Do we want to flow in that power? We should! It is the only way to thrive. However, we cannot seek God once in a while and expect to stand, we must seek continually.

When it does not look good; we need to just keep trusting. When it looks really good; we just keep seeking and trusting. We all know that there will be struggles in this world. We can easily see them all around and just as easily testify to their existence in our own lives. The question is, are we just as certain that just as Jesus overcame it all, we will too?

What do we testify the most about? What do we focus the most on? Do we look at the impossible and agree that it is impossible, or do we look at it and stand confidently on what God says?

It looked bad for the disciples. It looked bad for Jesus. It looked liked the whole thing was over. Even with Jesus telling them in advance how it would be, it just did not look good. He tried to help them flow through it smoothly. He told them to pray so that they would not fall into temptation. Unfortunately, they deserted Him then as well. Oh, but what was bad for them, can be very good for us if we will only learn the lesson well.

Never desert the Word of God. If we will stand in these worst of times focusing on His promises, we will behold the Glory of God and so will those around us. God is faithful in the smallest of things and in the largest of things. If you read this and realize just like me that you have deserted on occasion; be encouraged. Look how the disciples came back. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
