"If you have faith as a mustard seed"...faith working through love...(Matt. 17:20, Gal.5:6)
You perhaps wonder what in the world the heading of this devotion is all about as well as the bites of scripture; we will get to that momentarily. Have you ever been to a meeting, where they spoke a lot in acronyms? Well the heading is an acronym for depth of faith determines height of flight. Makes perfect sense now; right? The scripture speaks of what only a little faith can accomplish and of the fact that faith works through love. Hopefully it is all making sense to you now.
The first pictures that came to me as I considered this little phrase concerned air travel. People use everything from gliders for recreation, to the jumbo jet, and on up to the space shuttle; of course only a few get to use that. I can remember when I had the glider type of faith. That is faith with no power where you glide along with little concern or need for God except on special occasions. I shutter when I think of those days.
Then there are the single engine and smaller planes that people often call puddle-jumpers! I had the opportunity to crash in two of those, fortunately I didn’t! One time we ran out of fuel and ended up landing on a busy hi-way and bouncing into the ditch. On another occasion, our wings iced up. I did not know anything was really going on except that we just kept flying lower. It was not until we were out of danger that the friend I was flying with explained that he was very concerned for a while. In the case of running out fuel, we did joke and say that at least there was no danger of an explosion and burning up! I can tell you that as I remembered these incidents I was thanking God that I survived those times so that I could enjoy these times.
It is not for me to judge whether or not people can make heaven with glider, or a puddle jumper faith, but just imagine how much better the flight is in a jumbo jet. With a glider you always need a tow or you have to push yourself off a mountain. With a puddle jumper you are up and down and very much limited by weather conditions. A private jet is much more comfortable and depending on the plane they have a longer range. Jumbo jets can get you clear across the country or over an ocean and of course the shuttle can take you clear into orbit.
So the question is, how do we want to fly? Will we take the faith we have and grow it up loving God? Will we trust the power of God in our lives to carry us over, around, and through every circumstance? Spiritual flying was never intended to be recreational. If we want to experience the heights that God has prepared for us, we need to grow in the grace and the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. According to scripture, God has seated us in heavenly places with Christ Jesus. That tells me that our path of orbit is set so we might just as well get on board and go according to His preferred flight plan!
