DOMINATED OR CONTROLLED
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. (Romans 8:5 NLT)
I really believe that this description of our spirit life is a great one. Sinful things tend to dominate people. If we give the devil an inch he will take a mile. He loves to dominate our thoughts and our actions. If we don’t put a stop to him he just keeps pushing. For instance if a person starts out gazing at lewd pictures on the magazine rack, he will keep pushing until they buy the book. Then he will push to go deeper until he dominates the person’s thoughts and life with pornography. The same can be said of any sinful thing we peek over the fence at. Remember Eve in the garden.
Whenever a person starts talking about how the enemy will dominate, those who are dominated rise up and declare that they are not. Those who are following the spirit check their hearts to make sure that the Lord is in control. The resistance comes because the enemy does not like to loosen his control. The devil is like a dictator. The Spirit of God is a great leader. Search me Lord and know my heart. Reveal what is wrong in me.
When the Holy Spirit controls a person he is being led because he has willingly placed himself in the hands of one that he trusts. There is no fear in following the Spirit of God. There is no need to justify our actions or be defensive when the Spirit is in control.
Verse 6 tells us that when the Spirit is in control there is life and peace. This kind of life is not just breathing and walking. It is abundant life! This speaks of being whole as Jesus referred to when He said He came so we could be made whole.
There is peace and completeness when we allow the Holy Spirit to rule the show. The psalms tell us that God will keep those who keep their minds on Him in perfect peace. There is very little peace when the devil is dominating. When he is ruling the show nothing is right and nothing satisfies for long. This is because the enemy hates peace. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, so everything about peace angers the devil.
When we give the Holy Spirit control we remove the power of the enemy to dominate. Instead we can dominate him as we take the reigns and hand them over to the Spirit of the living God.
Life and peace are ours for the taking. Anytime there is a disruption we can turn our thoughts to the Lord. We can be continually transformed by the renewing of our minds. It is important that we never give up in our pursuit of the Lord. We cannot allow the enemy to convince us that we should live dominated by him. We can submit ourselves totally to God in the midst of any storm and resist the devil and he has no choice but to flee. I think we would all rather have the Holy Spirit control us than be dominated by the one who is out to destroy our souls.
