DON'T BACK UP

Remember that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize. You also must run in such a way that you will win. (1 Corinthians 9:24 NLT)

I just had the joy of watching my son run in the State Track Meet, and one thing I noticed was that everyone ran forward. I know that sounds silly, because everyone knows that races are run forward, objects are thrown forward, and jumpers jump forward. So as the Lord spoke to me about not backing up, it seemed that this was an obvious illustration.

Have you ever noticed in your walk of faith that as you grasp something new and begin to walk in it, there soon comes a temptation to slow down and be more cautious? Now if we are headed off in a wrong direction the enemy will push us along and encourage us to throw caution to the wind, but when something is good there will always be someone or something that tries to get us to at least slow down. The enemy knows if we slow down pretty soon we may be persuaded to stop and back up.

God tells us to run, to press, to be diligent and steadfast. And why does He tell us that? Because He knows our adversary the devil is looking for an opportunity to topple us. Jesus called and stills calls people to follow Him. It is pretty hard to play follow the leader going backwards. We all know that we are not as stable going backwards. Even walking backwards makes us easy pray if someone wants to give us a shove, and running it is even worse. If you want to see a sad picture of what happens when a group of people decide to back away from God’s truth, just line several people up one behind the other and then have them start walking backwards faster and faster. You could give one a push to speed up the process, but even without the push most or all would eventually end up on the ground.

On the other hand, if you have a group of people walking forward and someone ties to push one backwards, the one behind can hold them up and help them along and the adversary trying to stop them will be one who is trampled.

The way to keep Jesus in sight and win the prize is to keep moving forward. God opened the door to walking in His blood covenant through Jesus Christ. The deeper we go the more we experience the fullness of our salvation. So don’t back up. Continue to draw near to God through Jesus Christ. There is so much more. There is always so much more.
