DON'T GIVE UP

When they came near the camp, Moses saw the calf and the dancing. In terrible anger, he threw the stone tablets to the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain. (Ex 32:19)

Have you ever pitched a fit? I think we all have at one time or another. I think we have all been guilty of displaying terrible anger. Now I will grant you that these people Moses was leading were a bit of a handful and I am sure the Moses had reason to be more than a little disappointed in their behavior. Add to that the fact that He had been up on the mountain with God and it had to be nice there. We all hate to face the real world after we have just been in such a sweet and wonderful place with God. I know that more than once I have come out of a quiet time with the Lord where everything was peaceful and I was ready to take on the world, or so I thought, and all of a sudden I come face to face with a crying child or some other earthly distraction and I end up acting like I had been anywhere but with God. Perhaps this has never happened to you! If per chance it does, don’t give up.

There are also times when, like Moses, we are faced with others who just seem to be bent on being anything but what God would want them to be. Don’t give up on them either. God has a way of working if we will only have the faith to stand. He can work us past our own deficiencies and He can work in others lives as well.

Moses came down the mountain, and in disgust he through down the very words that God had sent Him with. Are you ever tempted to just throw away the very promises that God has made? Of course you are. Every time things do not go just the way you planned, you are tempted to think God has forgotten you and often you act like you believe it. We are all guilty of this. We may not like to admit it, but the truth is we have thrown down the very word of God just the same way Moses did. It is as if we are saying, “What is the use, it doesn’t work for me,” or “no body is paying any attention anyway.”

We quit telling people how good God is because we have told them before and it didn’t make any difference. At least that is what the devil would like us think. The truth is that God’s word always accomplishes something. The only way it can fail is if it is never spoken or applied.

Well, after seeing more of the depravity of the people, Moses continued His fit. He called everyone on the Lord’s side to step up and then he sent the Levites in to teach them a lesson. It certainly got the people’s attention, and it did make the point that God needed to come first in their lives. So ultimately God did work things to good.

I don’t know if God’s original plan in this was for Moses to bust up the first set of tablets. I really think He might have preferred that Moses handled it differently. It is my desire to grow in the Lord to a place where I handle all things the way that the Lord wants them handled. But even if I don’t I am going to keep on pressing. It is also my desire to help others to get to that same place and when they don’t, I want to be sure to have the compassion and the patience with them that the Lord has with me. So let’s all agree not to give up on the Word of God.
