DON'T PRETEND
So get rid of all malicious behavior and deceit. Don't just pretend to be good! (1 Peter 2:1)
No matter how good we may be at pretending, the truth is we are not comfortable doing it. We know when the outside is not a true revelation of what is inside. We don’t need Santa to tell us if we are bad or good. That is why so many people just hope that somehow they will have more good marks than bad when the final count is taken. That is also why some give up along the way because they know they have way more bad than good and they think there is no hope. I have heard more than one person say that they are too for gone and that God would not want them. These people have a tendency to pretend that it really doesn’t matter to them anyway. But if it did not matter, why would they say it?
There are also those who look at pretenders and use them as an excuse to ignore God. I am talking about those outside of the body of Christ who look at people inside who they consider to be hypocrites and think that will be a good enough excuse when they stand before God. Of course they hope they will never have to stand before Him, but they will. We all will.
Peter had a revelation that would cover all the bases. He said just get rid of all malicious behavior. The word is directed to whoever is reading it. Don’t look at other people. Look at God and use Him as the standard to measure by. People who pretend are miserable on the inside. Christians who pretend are not comfortable because the Holy Spirit within them just keeps stirring. Those who pretend they are fine without God are not comfortable, because deep inside there is still that part of them that God put there that longs for God. If they were truly comfortable without God, they would not have such an objection to those who love Him. They would not be so busy trying to remove the knowledge of God from others. Nations have tried to remove God and they have suffered. Our nation would be no different. So people should quit pretending we don’t need God.
How do we overcome the malicious behavior? How do we get our lives in line so that we no longer have to pretend? Well, we just need to get honest. On an individual basis, we must recognize our own faults and give them to God. When we blow it, we own up to it, pray for strength to overcome it, and then do whatever we need to get rid of it. We don’t have to be hypocrites, jealous, or back stabbers. However, the way to overcome that is to change our diet. Yes we need to be fed by the word of God. We need to desire that His will, His ways, and His desires be the driving force in our life.
God knows who is pretending and who isn’t. The final judgment will not be made according to the good or the bad marks. It will be made based on our relationship with Jesus Christ. The stronger that is, longer the good list gets and the bad list gets erased because God’s way becomes the natural way. There is no pretending with Him.
