DON’T WAIT TOO LONG
Then Joshua asked them, “How long are you going to wait before taking possession of the remaining land, the Lord, the God of your ancestors has given to you?” (Joshua 18:3)
There are times to wait, and times to act. Waiting to hear from God is good waiting. Waiting to act on what God says is not good waiting. I am certain that we have all done both good and bad waiting, but every day is an opportunity to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
How do we know for sure it is God? If it is good, it is God! Now that is simple, isn’t it? Except when it is not! Let’s face it, some things look good and sound good, but they are not so good. Peter spoke to Jesus telling Him not to talk about going ahead with His crazy plan, and made perfect sense, but it did not! Jesus called it a trap. (Matt. 16:23) It was devil’s food! (5:8) Peter warned us to stay alert, because the devil prowls around looking for people to devour. I made a note to myself that I do not want to be devil’s food, and I do not want to eat it either.
Jesus said in John 10:10 that the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but He came to give us a rich and satisfying life. So, will it destroy us or satisfy us? Well, some things may look and sound satisfying, but they are destructive. All of this can sound confusing, but really, we know it is not!
Waiting when we know what is right is never comfortable. If we wait too long, the opportunity is gone, and we are anything but satisfied.
But what if we do it wrong? What if we don’t? Fear not! That is what the Lord says. Don’t worry! Worry and fear work against us. They produce negative results because they focus our attention on all that we do not want. Worry is a thief! It is a tool of the devil. Give it to God.
Instead of waiting in worry, wait in assurance that God is for you and that He can do all that He has promised. Don’t say I am worried about this or that. Say I am confident that God has it.
There is no doubt that there are times when what God wants can feel uncomfortable to us. There are some things we just do not want to do. There are times when we feel like we should when we really would rather not. These might be times when we can ask ourselves which way we would be more satisfied. Jesus was going to the cross. Peter’s suggestion was appealing but not satisfying. The devil tempted Jesus with three appealing plans, but Jesus spoke the more satisfying words of God.
In the end, Israel stayed faithful for a time and then they were not. I am certain that you want to remain faithful till the end. It is ok to rush into a good thing! God is able to help or to stop you if you get ahead of Him. He will not make you do anything. Fortunately, He will also help us recover if we mess up.
So, don’t wait to go. Don’t wait to defeat the devil. Don’t wait to wait on the Lord. Take the land!
