DON'T WORRY

So I tell you, don't worry about everyday life. (Matthew 6:25 NLT)

How can we possibly live without worrying? We have to worry! It is not normal not to worry! Everybody worries! Still, Jesus tells us not to worry. It is in fact natural to worry. However, Jesus offers us supernatural life. Wouldn’t it be nice not to worry? It does seem like some people enjoy worrying. Some are worried if they have nothing to worry about. So let’s consider what it is that we worry about the most.

Things! Yes! We worry about things! The more things we have, the more we have to worry about. It is God’s idea to bless us, but if the things he blesses us with become things to worry about, then the things we have may have to go.

People who are poor often envy those who are rich. Sometimes people who are rich wonder what it would like to be poor and not have so much to worry about. Rich folks never worry about if there is food to eat. They worry about what they would do if they had to give up their second or third residence! There have even been people who were successful and powerful who moved to the streets because it was easier than all the pressure and worry of maintaining all the things.

Scripture tells us that God has given us the power to get wealth and that He enjoys the prosperity of His people. Jesus warns us not to make those things our treasures. He says, “Why worry about what you are going to wear?” He is right. Worry won’t help a thing.

He wants us to trust Him. He wants us to believe what He says. It is not easy not to worry. We have a fight a good fight of faith in order to keep from it. We have to continually cast it down. If we find ourselves entering into things that are only going to give us opportunity to worry, then perhaps they are not things we should enter into.

Jesus warned us not to get caught up in the same traps that those in the world are caught up in. He was not telling us that we should not have things or that we should not desire to prosper. He was telling us not to let the things rule us. If we can have the things and they are just things, then they will not own us.

On our recent trip, gas was pretty expensive to begin with and then it got worse as the time passed. I did not worry about what it cost because it was worth it to get to our destination. The same was true as we returned and gas hit it all time high prices. I still watched for the most reasonably prices stations, but I was not worried about the price. What good would that do? Imagine pulling into a station and just sitting there until someone came and asked what I was doing and I told them I was worried about the price waiting for it to come down! They would tell me to worry as long as I wanted, but either buy the gas or move on. I know that is a small thing compared to some things we feel we have to worry about, but compared to God all things are small.

Friends, God is either who he says He is and He will do what He says He will do, or we are all the greatest fools of all. Jesus said don’t worry, so why don’t we try it. Worry is something the devil sends at us in order to choke our faith. It is sin to join the devil in his plans. So what ever it is that he has us worrying about, we need to serve him notice that we will believe God.
