DRIFT PROOF YOUR FAITH
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. (Hebrews 2:1 NKJ)
Love does not drift. It either is or it isn’t. Feelings can change, but love will keep them where they belong. If feelings fade, they can go completely out of site. Feelings will then try and convince us that the love is gone too. Love on the other hand will keep the feelings stirred up. So it is important to make sure that love dictates to feelings, and not feelings to love.
I was reminded of a time when my father caught a halibut while fishing in Alaska. He was so tickled. It was the biggest fish he had ever caught. However, a mistake was made when it came to bringing the fish into the boat. We shot the fish, it bit the line, and there was this big fish drifting away with the tide. All we could do was watch it disappear! That was a sad picture. Fortunately he caught another so he did have to spend the rest of his life talking about the one that got away.
As sad as it was to watch that fish drift away, it is much sadder to watch people drift away in their faith. How I hate to see people who were once strong in the Lord and the power of His might drift and struggle. It is comforting know God can bring them back and will welcome them with open arms when they come, but still it is so sad to see.
As I read this passage of scripture in Hebrews reminding us to give the more earnest heed to what we have heard, I thought of the role love can play in keeping us from drifting. Have you ever noticed how you hang on the words of people you care about? We have touched in the past on how people in love will believe out right lies and refuse to face the truth about someone that they love.
Now imagine how strong we will stay in our faith as we keep our love stirred up. After all, we are in love with God. He cannot fail. He never lies. Life is in every word that He speaks. He reveals the truth and the truth sets us free.
We will not drift when we are in love. Love will keep us anchored. Love will respond to the slightest whisper from Lord. Love responds no matter what. We are never too tired for the one we love. We do a lot of things we might prefer not to do at the time for love.
Let’s face it; there are times when we don’t feel much like lining up with the Word of God. Sometimes we would prefer to be bitter, or envious, or hold a grudge. Sometimes we don’t want to know the truth about ourselves or about someone else because we have already made up our minds. But if we will yield to our love for God it will cause us to pay attention and do what God wants. Love will keep us from drifting.
