DUMBER THAN DEMONS

So Jesus healed great numbers of sick people who had many different kinds of diseases, and he ordered many demons to come out of their victims. But because they knew who he was, he refused to allow the demons to speak. (Mark 1:34 NLT)

This scripture brought to my mind the question, “who is dumber than a demon?” The answer according to this is, “anyone who does not know who Jesus is!” Now I know that this in not necessarily what people would call religiously correct, but it is still a fact. In fact, there are a very large number of religious people who fall into the category of being dumber than demons.

As you read through this first chapter of Mark, you will see the gospel spelled out so plain and simple. You read of John the Baptist who tells of His mission to introduce Jesus. You see Jesus calling people to turn from sin and believe the good news. You see Him teaching with real authority and telling demons to get out. And you see that the demons knew who He was.

As Jesus went about healing diseases and telling the good news, people were not as interested in who He was as they were in what He could do. The believed He was who He said He was because they believed that only a person sent from God could possibly do all these things. They were not afraid to have Him disrupt their lives, because they could see that what He could do for them would far out weigh anything that it might cost them.

Then Jesus did the ultimate. He healed a man and told him that his sins were forgiven. The religious leaders said that it was blasphemy because no one but God could forgive sins. If only they had listened to themselves, they might have known who He was. In truth, they did not want to know. They were more concerned about themselves than they were about the true things of God. In my book that makes them dumber than demons.

You will also notice as you read, that those who were healed and delivered could not keep from telling people about Jesus. He stopped the demons, but He did not stop the people. He told them not to tell anyone, but they just could not help it.

Now what are we going to do? Are we going to be smarter than demons? Are we going to believe God or are we going to be outsmarted by the lies of demons? Are we going to make sure that we know who Jesus is in every area of our lives? I have heard people pray and call demons dumb. I am sure I have told some stupid demon to get away. I am also sure that I have allowed them to outsmart me on many occasions. Well, I guess I would rather be called just about anything but “dumber than a demon.” So I am going to make sure I know Jesus more each day. How about you?
