EASIER SAID THAN DONE

Use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil...(Ephesians 6:13a NLT)

“Easier said than done,” is a phrase common to my generation and several before mine. Today’s equivalent may be something more like, “yah right!” No matter what phrase a person uses the message is the same and implies that it is not likely to happen because it is too hard! As long as we think something is not likely to happen, it probably won’t! The fact is that when our first response is to decide something is too difficult, it becomes much easier to not even try. Then “easier said than done,” becomes “why should I try?”

Unfortunately this is often the response that we as Christians have to the things that God reveals to us in His word. When we read that Wives should submit, husbands should live like Christ, children should obey, and fathers need to instruct just right, we may have a tendency to just move on without really asking God to show us how to accomplish His word. The only problem with this attitude is that it keeps us from the fullness that God wants for us. He does not give us any directions that are too difficult to follow. We need to take on a battle cry that says, “easier done than discarded!” Yes we need to be honest and face the fact that anything we do not say amen too, we are actually discarding. We cannot afford to discard any part of the word of God!

In order to follow His will, we must be full of His word. When we are full of His word, we will be strong in the Lord’s mighty power. It is not just a coincidence that Paul put this final word to the Ephesians right after reviewing the behavior of wives, husbands, children, fathers, masters, and servants. These were and still are difficult assignments. However, the Lord’s mighty power makes all the difference in all things.

The Lord tells us to put on all of the armor of God. If we do, we will stand. We won’t cower when the enemy says it is too difficult. We won’t give in to the urge to skip over to something else. We will recognize who we are at war with and we will be confident that he is a defeated foe.

Now comes the part that we must not overlook. Just putting on the armor is not enough. We need to use every piece. Many Christians live defeated lives because we don’t use the armor. We are all guilty of acting at times like God has a remote control that runs the armor and we are waiting for Him to do what the armor is supposed to do. That is why people get the idea that if something bad happens it was because God wanted it to. If He didn’t want it to happen He would have done something. What did Jesus do in the storm? He got up and rebuked it. He did not just lie there and wait to see what God was going to do.

When we are born again, we put on Christ. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit we receive power. It is up to us to put that power to work by faith. We have it. God says use it. If you don’t have it, get it. It is easily done!
